It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Cleotha Lewis, a cherished father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, who departed this life on June 18, 2026, at the age of 80. Born on October 29, 1945, in Monroe, Louisiana, Cleotha was the beloved son of the late Cumire Washington Lewis and Cleo Lewis.
Cleotha's journey of resilience and determination began in the heart of Monroe and later saw him flourish in Gary, Indiana, where he graduated from Frobel High School. He served his country with honor in the United States Army from 1967 to 1969, reaching the rank of Sergeant. Following his active duty, Cleotha continued his dedication to service in the United States Army Reserve.
A man of remarkable work ethic, Cleotha built a vibrant career starting at U.S. Steel Gary Works, moving through North American Rockwell, and eventually serving the City of Gary. His career path was a testament to his perseverance and dedication, as he rose from a sanitation worker to a supervisory role in the Street Sweeping Department. His professional journey continued at Arban and Carosi in Woodbridge, VA, before he settled in Richmond, VA, where he worked at the Waste Water Treatment facility until his retirement.
Beyond his professional achievements, Cleotha was a man of deep passions. He was an avid basketball fan, sharing countless joyful moments playing the sport with his sons and eagerly following televised games. His enthusiasm extended to both college and professional football, where he found camaraderie and joy.
Cleotha's life was a testament to the power of love and family. He was predeceased by his loving parents and siblings, Virginia, Cleaster, Elmira, and Bruce, who undoubtedly welcomed him with open arms. He is survived by his devoted sons, Ramsey T. (Kiana) Lewis and Bobby W. (Valerie) Lewis, who carry forward his legacy with grace and honor. His spirit lives on through his four beloved grandchildren, Brad, Jerall Boswell, Daylin M. Hunt-Lewis, and Aiyanna V. Hunt-Lewis, and his nine precious great-grandchildren, who will forever cherish the memories of their great-grandfather's warmth and wisdom.
Cleotha was a man who loved fiercely and was fiercely loved in return. His favorite saying, "I don't go along to get along," encapsulated his indomitable spirit and unwavering integrity. He was a pillar of strength for his family, instilling in them values of hard work, resilience, and love.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the (LA ladies) and the Veteran's Hospital staff in both Louisiana and Arizona for their compassionate care and support.
