With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Claudia Laureen McKoin, a cherished sister, devoted aunt, and esteemed friend, who departed this world peacefully on April 19, 2026, at the age of 78. Born on August 7, 1947, in Cleveland, Ohio, Claudia was the beloved daughter of William D. McKoin and Moneva C. Starks McKoin, who instilled in her a profound sense of integrity, compassion, and a lifelong commitment to public service. Claudia's academic journey was distinguished, beginning with her graduation from John Adams High School in Cleveland in 1965. She pursued higher education at Howard University, where she graduated in 1969 with a Bachelor of Arts in Marketing. Her thirst for knowledge led her to George Washington University, where she obtained her M.B.A. in 1977, followed by a Juris Doctorate from American University in 1999. Claudia's academic achievements were a testament to her dedication and passion for learning. Her professional career was marked by significant contributions to the telecommunications industry and public policy. Claudia began her career in Human Resources at C&P Telephone Company in 1970. She later advanced to a managerial position in Federal Regulatory Matters at Bell Atlantic. At Verizon Communications, she held roles of increasing responsibility, culminating in her position as Director of Public Policy and External Affairs. Claudia retired from Verizon in 2003, leaving behind a legacy of leadership and innovation. She continued to serve her community in Intergovernmental Relations at the Council of the District of Columbia. Claudia's commitment to social action and public service was reflected in her active memberships and leadership roles in numerous organizations. She was a proud Member of the District of Columbia Bar, Maryland Bar, and American Bar Associations. Her dedication extended to serving on the Academic Advisory Council at Potomac College, the Dean's Diversity Council at Washington College of Law, and the Boards of Directors for the YWCA of the National Capital Area and Gateway Georgia Avenue Revitalization Corp. As a member of Delta Sigma Theta, Girl Friends Inc., and The Links Inc., Claudia built lifelong bonds and contributed to meaningful causes. The Public Service Leadership Training Academy of the Federal City Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, aptly named "The McKoin Academy," stands as a tribute to her legacy and impact. Beyond her professional and civic achievements, Claudia found joy in life's simple pleasures. She was an avid tennis player, skier, and golfer, embracing the outdoors with enthusiasm and grace. Her vibrant spirit and love for life were evident in her interactions with her sorority sisters, girlfriends, and link sisters. Claudia took immense pride in her identity as a Howard University alumna and was actively involved in the Bison community. Claudia is survived by her loving sisters, Charlene C. McKoin, Moneva V. McKoin, and Pamela D. McKoin, her brother-in-law Laurence C. Morse, and her cherished nephew and niece, Stephan M. Morse and Kristina C. Morse. She was an amazing daughter, sister, and a beloved friend to many, leaving behind a legacy of kindness and dedication that will continue to inspire all who knew her. A celebration of Claudia's life will be held on May 8, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at the Peoples Congregational Church UCC, located at 4704 13th Street NW, Washington, DC.
