It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Clare J. Blankenship, a cherished mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend. Clare departed this world on May 11, 2026, enveloped in the love of her family at her side.
Born in Boston, Massachusetts, on February 1, 1929, Clare was the beloved daughter of the late John and Margaret MacLellan. She grew up surrounded by the vibrancy of the city, an experience that would shape her lifelong love for people, learning, and culture.
In 1948, she married the love of her life, Robert "Bob" Blankenship, with whom she shared many beautiful years until his passing. Together, they built not just a family, but a legacy of love, laughter, and unity. Clare was predeceased by her husband, her sisters Adele Walsh, Thérèse Mason, and Louise MacLellan, and her grandson, baby Robert Nolan Blankenship, whose memories she cherished dearly.
Clare is survived by her devoted brother, Donald MacLellan, and his wife Marilyn of Hingham, MA. She leaves behind a loving family that includes her children: Marsha Grills of Milton, MA; Elisabeth Silva and her husband Jeffery Silva of Bethesda, MD; Caleb Blankenship and his wife Kathleen Blankenship of Lingle, WY; David Blankenship and his wife Patricia Blankenship of South Portland, ME; and Susan Blankenship and her husband Samuel Ross of South Portland, ME.
Her legacy continues through her eight grandchildren: Katie Cronin, Elisabeth Grills, Cameron Blankenship, Anastasia Silva, Mary Clare Blankenship, Graham Silva, Grace Blankenship, and Max Ross, as well as four great-grandchildren, who brought immense joy to her later years.
Clare's career was distinguished by her dedication and warmth, working with Boston Partners in Education and later at the Boston Exposition and Convention Center, where she remained active into her 80s. Her professional life was marked by a commitment to nurturing education and community engagement.
A pillar of her community, Clare was a former member of the Milton Women's Club and volunteered her time with Milton Meals on Wheels and Junior Great Books. Her life was a testament to service, and she inspired those around her to give back to their communities.
Clare was a lover of travel, books, and ice cream, passions she eagerly shared with family and friends, enriching their lives with her adventurous spirit and zest for life. Her culinary skills were legendary, and her home at 26 The Ledgeway was the heart of countless cherished gatherings.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Clare's life on May 19, 2026, at St. Agatha’s Church in Milton, MA, with a service commencing at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Milton Public Library, honoring Clare’s lifelong love of reading and learning.
Clare J. Blankenship's legacy is one of love, kindness, and unwavering dedication to family and community. Her spirit will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her, and her memory will forever be a blessing to all.
