In Loving Memory of Christopher Stephen Kruger
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Christopher Stephen Kruger, a cherished husband, devoted father/papa, loving son, and treasured friend. Chris departed this world on February 1, 2026, at the age of 61, after a courageous battle with sepsis, compounded by biventricular heart failure secondary to atherosclerotic heart disease and acute renal failure. He was surrounded by the love of his family and the caring staff at the University of Iowa Hospital.
Chris was born on December 30, 1964, in the vibrant city of New York, New York, to Mike and Janice Kruger. His father, Mike Kruger, and brothers, Dirk and Paul Kruger, predeceased him, leaving behind a legacy of love and resilience that Chris embodied every day.
Chris is survived by his beloved mother, Janice Kruger, of Grundy Center, Iowa, who along with his wife, Shelli, remained a steadfast source of strength and love. Chris and Shelli began their beautiful journey together on July 11, 1992, in Waterloo, Iowa. Their marriage of 34 years was a testament to love, partnership, and shared dreams. Together, they raised four remarkable sons: Jace (Kiley) Kruger of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Gabriel (Tina) Kruger of Waterloo, Iowa, Lucas Kruger of Cedar Falls, Iowa, and Joshua (Braley) Kruger of Waterloo, Iowa. Chris’s legacy continues through his five adored grandchildren: Myla (9), Huxley (5), Ivory (5), Elias (3), and Giavana (3), who brought endless joy to his life.
Chris was a proud alumnus of the University of Northern Iowa, where he earned a bachelor's degree in accounting in 1990. He dedicated 16 years to GameStop as a General Manager, where he combined his love for video games with his professional acumen. Later, he pursued his entrepreneurial spirit by co-founding a business with a close friend, sharing his passion for learning and growth with his family.
Beyond his professional achievements, Chris was a man of diverse interests and hobbies. He was an enthusiastic sports fan, especially relishing his sons' sporting events and even coaching their teams. His passion for wrestling and fantasy football leagues brought him a sense of community and joy. Chris loved nothing more than gathering with friends and family, engaging in spirited games of darts, and belting out tunes during karaoke nights, reminiscent of the days he and Shelli spent at Jim's Place.
Chris was known for his contagious smile and heartwarming laugh. His presence was both healing and comforting, a testament to his unmatched compassion and generosity. He was a man who would selflessly give the shirt off his back to anyone in need, and his love for cooking was an extension of his warm, welcoming nature. Chris found immense joy in preparing meals for his loved ones, always eager to share his latest culinary creations.
A celebration of Chris's life will be held on May 2, 2026, at 11:00 AM at the Kruger-Hemmen Shelter in Dike, IA. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the medical staff at the University of Iowa Hospital for their compassionate care and to all friends and family for their unwavering support during this difficult time.
Chris Kruger was truly one of a kind, a mentor to many and a friend to all. His absence leaves a void in our hearts, but his spirit will live on through the memories we cherish. As we say goodbye, we know he is gone from our sight but never from our hearts. Rest in peace, dear Chris.
