Christine Smith, a cherished mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and devoted wife, passed away on May 1, 2026, in the gentle embrace of her loved ones. Born on January 10, 1943, in Memphis, Tennessee, Christine's life was a testament to resilience, love, and unwavering commitment to her family and community. Her departure leaves a profound void in the hearts of all who knew her, but her legacy of kindness and strength will forever echo in their lives.
Christine was the beloved daughter of Carie F. Washington and Lee Ethel Jarrett, who predeceased her. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Rodger Jarrett, and her dearly loved grandson, Chavis C. Atkins. She is survived by her devoted husband of five years, Arthur Smith, with whom she shared a beautiful companionship and love story that began in 1960. Together, they built a family of four children: Danette Hayes, Arthur Smith, Gregory Smith, and Yolanda Atkins, who were her pride and joy. Christine's family further blossomed to include 10 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren, each of whom held a special place in her heart.
Christine was a beacon of love and support to her siblings, Luther Jarrett and Helen Whigham, and she shared a unique bond of faith and friendship with her congregation of spiritual friends, having been baptized as one of Jehovah's Witnesses in 1993.
Her early years were marked by a strong sense of determination and purpose. Christine graduated from Du Sable High School in Chicago, Illinois, and went on to earn her certificate in nursing. Her career was a diverse tapestry of caregiving, initially working in nursing care before transitioning to become a dental assistant for Dr. Chroaman. Her professional journey culminated as a school transporter for Luther South High School, where she retired, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and inspiration.
Christine's life was richly adorned with simple joys and passions. She had a profound love for flowers, finding peace and beauty in their vibrant blooms. Her home was often filled with the comforting aromas of her culinary delights, especially her famous banana pudding and peach cobbler, which were as sweet as her disposition. Christine's warmth extended to everyone who gathered around her table, where she orchestrated hearty family dinners, creating lasting memories with her loved ones. She had a particular fondness for game shows and spent countless hours creating grape juice concoctions and watching movies with her grandchildren, moments they will cherish forever.
Throughout her life, Christine demonstrated remarkable resilience, overcoming challenges with grace and fortitude. As a single parent, she ensured her family was always provided for, offering a home filled with warmth, love, and laughter. Her employers and colleagues remember her as an overachiever, whose effectiveness and motivation inspired all who worked alongside her.
