December 6, 1945 — May 11, 2026

It is with heavy hearts yet deep gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Charlie "Butch" Sampson, a cherished husband, brother, grandfather, and friend. Born on December 6, 1945, in the close-knit town of Tolono, Illinois, Charlie graced this world with his presence for 80 meaningful years before passing peacefully on May 11, 2026, following a brief hospitalization. Charlie was the beloved son of the late Everett and Erma Jean Sampson (née Milbourn), who instilled in him the values of hard work, kindness, and community—principles he carried throughout his life. He was preceded in death by his parents and his dear sister, Sharon Jeter, whose memories he cherished deeply. A proud veteran, Charlie served honorably with the United States Air Force, a chapter of his life that filled him with pride and a steadfast sense of duty. After his service, he dedicated many years to the University of Illinois, from which he retired, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and integrity. In 1993, Charlie married the love of his life, Elaine Sampson (née Berryhill). Together, they shared 33 years of unwavering companionship and love, creating a home filled with warmth and laughter. Charlie was a devoted family man, his steadying presence a constant source of strength and comfort. He is survived by his beloved wife Elaine, and his loving sisters Nancy, Sue, and Rose, who will forever hold his memory close. Charlie was also a grandfather, whose heartwarming stories and kind spirit will be remembered by his grandchild. Though he leaves behind no great-grandchildren, his legacy of love and kindness will undoubtedly echo through the generations. An avid fisherman, Charlie found joy and peace in the simple pleasures of life, often casting a line into tranquil waters where he found solace and reflection. His warmth and genial nature made him a well-liked member of his community, where he offered friendship and support to all who knew him. A celebration of Charlie's life will be held at the Sunset location in Mahomet, Illinois, where family and friends will gather to honor and remember the indelible mark he left on their lives. The Sampson family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate nursing staff at Carle Foundation Hospital for their excellent care and support during Charlie's final days. Though our hearts are heavy with his absence, we find comfort in the beautiful memories and enduring love he gave us. Charlie's life was a testament to kindness, service, and love, and he will be deeply missed by all whose lives he touched. May he rest in peace, forever remembered and cherished.
