Charlie "Butch" Sampson

December 6, 1945 — May 11, 2026

It is with heavy hearts yet deep gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Charles E Sampson, a cherished husband, brother, grandfather, and friend. Born on December 6, 1945, in the close-knit town of Tolono, Illinois, Charlie graced this world with his presence for 80 meaningful years before passing peacefully on May 11, 2026, following a brief hospitalization. Charlie was the beloved son of the late Everett and Erma Sampson , who instilled in him the values of hard work, kindness, and community—principles he carried throughout his life. He was preceded in death by his dear sister, Sharon Jeter, whose memories he cherished deeply. A proud veteran, Charlie served honorably with the United States Air Force, a chapter of his life that filled him with pride and a steadfast sense of duty. After his service he dedicated many years to the University of Illinois from which he retired. In 1993, Charlie married the love of his life, Elaine Sampson (née Berryhill). Together, they shared 33 years of unwavering companionship and love, creating a home filled with warmth and laughter. He is survived by his wife Elaine, and his loving sisters Nancy, Sue, and Rose. Also surviving are daughter Lacy and sons David and Chaz and his wife Sara. Late in life Charlie became a grandfather to Zach, who showed him the special bond only found with grandchildren. Charlie's kind spirit will live on through Zach. A celebration of Charlie's life will be held at the Sunset Funeral Home location in Mahomet, Illinois, where family and friends will gather to honor and remember the indelible mark he left on their lives. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the local VFW or animal shelter of choice. The Sampson family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate nursing staff at Carle Foundation Hospital for their excellent care and support during Charlie's final days. Though our hearts are heavy with his absence, we find comfort in the beautiful memories and enduring love he gave us. Charlie's life was a testament to kindness, service, and love, and he will be deeply missed by all whose lives he touched. May he rest in peace, forever remembered and cherished.
