In Loving Memory
Charley T. Watson
February 2, 1949 — May 6, 2026
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Charley T. Watson, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, who departed this life on May 6, 2026, at the age of 77. Charley was born on February 2, 1949, in Tchula, Mississippi, to Robert "RL" and Ethel D. Watson. He was a beacon of strength and love to all who knew him, and his legacy will forever remain in the hearts of his family and friends.
Charley was the devoted husband to his cherished wife, Gwendolyn, with whom he celebrated 53 years of marriage. Their union, which began on August 6, 1972, in Chicago, was a testament to enduring love and partnership. Together, they nurtured a beautiful family, raising four sons—Duane, Kevin, Charles (Theresa), and Marlon (Jasmine)—and delighting in the joy of their six grandchildren: Tyrell, Charles Jr., Donovan, Brayden, Brianna, and Brynleigh.
A graduate of Tchula Attendance Center, Charley proudly served his country in the U.S. Army, where he demonstrated unwavering dedication and bravery during the Vietnam War. He was honored with the National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and Vietnam Campaign Medal, reflecting his commitment and valor.
Following his military service, Charley dedicated 41 years of his life to his career at International Paper, where he excelled as a Clamp Driver and Starch Maker. His leadership and advocacy within the Paper Workers Union were instrumental in advancing workers' rights, and he was held in high esteem by his colleagues.
Charley possessed a deep love for the simple joys of life, particularly tending to his vegetable garden. He generously shared the fruits of his labor, offering tomatoes and greens to neighbors, embodying a spirit of kindness and community. His grandchildren were the light of his life, and he spent countless hours teaching them the art of fishing, gardening, lawn care, and imparting valuable life lessons.
Known for his warmth and hospitality, Charley hosted many holiday gatherings, creating an atmosphere of love and laughter. His gift for making everyone feel welcome and valued left an indelible mark on all who crossed his path.
Charley was preceded in death by his parents, Robert "RL" and Ethel D. Watson; his sisters, Rebecca and Georgia; his brother, Robert Earl Watson; and his loyal dog, Lucky. He is survived by his wife, Gwendolyn; his sons and grandchildren; his brother, Willie (Cynthia); his sister, Debra; his Nephews and Nieces, whom he loved dearly; extended family and close friends who will forever cherish his memory.
A service to honor and celebrate Charley's remarkable life will be held on May 12, 2026, at 1:00 PM at Greenlawn Cemetery, located at 761 Arenia C Mallory Rd, Lexington, MS 39095.
The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Compassus for their compassionate care, and to Sherry Swails and Fantaeja Franklin for their genuine kindness and support.
