Charles passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, leaving behind a legacy of love, wisdom, and unwavering faith. Born on August 27, 1948, in Decatur, Georgia, Charles was the cherished son of William Meeks Gardner and Hazel Gardner, who predeceased him. From a young age, Charles exemplified kindness, curiosity, and a deep sense of responsibility, qualities that would guide him throughout his life. Charles shared 55 wonderful years of marriage with his devoted wife, Susan Graham Gardner. Together, they built a life filled with love and laughter, nurturing a family that became the heart of Charles's world. He was a proud and dedicated father to William Gardner (Jessica), Mary Margaret Chapman (Jim), and Benjamin Gardner (Micah). His legacy of love and kindness continues through his seven treasured grandchildren, who brought immense joy to his life. Charles's professional journey was as diverse as it was impactful. He dedicated many years to shaping young minds as a school teacher, instilling a love of learning and compassion in his students. Later, he served as a Federal Probation Officer, where his empathy and fairness left a lasting impression on many. Answering a higher calling, Charles became a Charismatic Episcopal priest, providing spiritual guidance and comfort to all who sought his counsel. His career culminated as a counselor, where his innate ability to listen and understand brought solace to countless individuals. An active member of St. Paul's Catholic Church, Charles found great fulfillment in his faith and community. He was known for his generous spirit and commitment to helping others, always ready to lend a hand or offer a word of encouragement. In his leisure time, Charles was an avid cooker of pound cakes, delighting family and friends with his culinary creations. His passion for gardening was evident in the vibrant blooms that adorned his home, and he had a keen eye for antiques, appreciating the stories and history behind each piece. A funeral service to honor and celebrate Charles's remarkable life will be held on June 16, 2026, at St. Paul's Catholic Church, located at 2120 3rd Ave North, Birmingham, AL 35203. The family invites all who knew and loved Charles to join them in remembering the warmth and light he brought into their lives. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Charles's memory to St. Paul's Catholic Church or the UAB Department of Neurology/Parkinson Research, organizations that were dear to his heart. Charles William Gardner was a beacon of kindness and faith, whose legacy will continue to inspire and guide those who were fortunate enough to know him. As we bid farewell to a remarkable man, we hold dearly to the memories and love he leaves behind, forever grateful for the time we shared.
