November 23, 1934 — May 15, 2026
In loving memory of Charles Wesly Leffingwell, who departed this earthly realm on May 15, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, knowledge, and a zest for life that will forever inspire those who had the privilege of knowing him. Born on November 23, 1934, in the picturesque town of La Jolla, Charles graced this world with his presence for 91 remarkable years.
Son to Gertrude and Charles Leffingwell, Charles exhibited a bright and inquisitive nature from a young age. He pursued his education with vigor, graduating from San Dieguito High School before advancing to UCLA and the University of Pennsylvania School of Dentistry. His pursuit of knowledge never ceased, and he became a lifelong student and teacher, touching countless lives with his wisdom and compassion.
Charles's career as a dentist spanned 46 fruitful years, 43 of which he dedicated to his beloved practice in Cardiff. He was an innovator, consistently ahead of his time, integrating cutting-edge alternative health modalities into his practice long before their necessity was widely recognized. His dedication to his patients' well-being was matched only by his kindness and generosity, setting a standard of care that was unparalleled.
Outside of his professional life, Charles was a man of many talents and passions. A wizard in mechanics, he found joy in building and restoring sand buggies, Baja bugs, and vintage vehicles from 1928 to 1977. His creativity knew no bounds, manifesting in beautiful jewelry pieces, sculptures, and paintings. His insatiable thirst for knowledge and his wit were the cornerstones of a personality that brought joy and laughter to all who knew him.
Charles's personal qualities were as impressive as his professional achievements. He was a true mentor, sharing his vast knowledge freely with anyone eager to learn. His guidance, kindness, grace, and compassion left a lasting impression on all, encouraging others to reach their full potential and contribute positively to the world around them. His philosophy of never giving up and always striving for excellence was evident in every aspect of his life.
Charles's heart belonged to his beloved wife, Johanna Leffingwell, with whom he shared 46 beautiful years of marriage. Her love and care were instrumental in his life, especially during his later years when he faced numerous health challenges with courage and resilience. Together, they created a loving family that includes daughters Kathy Winslow (and husband John), Cheri Boggeln (and husband Dennis), sons Tom Leffingwell (and wife Laura), Charlie Leffingwell, Michael Bender (and wife Claudia), stepdaughters Leah Hoffman and Cathy Loefner, stepson Dan Shire (and wife Amy), Mary Jo Prather Whitner, and his brother Tom Leffingwell. His legacy is further carried by his 20 grandchildren and 27.5 great-grandchildren, who will continue to carry his spirit forward.
Charles was predeceased by his parents and his previous wives, Nancy Gabriel Leffingwell, Karen Moberg, and Kaye Raymond. He now joins them in eternal peace, leaving behind a world forever enriched by his presence.
A celebration of Charles's life will be held on August 22, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Charlie's Electric, 710 HWY 101 Encinitas. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made towards the completion of the 1929 Model A Roadster Project, a testament to his lifelong passion for restoring beauty and function to the world.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to all of Charles's patients who entrusted him with their oral health, the dedicated staff who supported him, and the healthcare professionals and advocates who provided him with more time to share his love, knowledge, and humor with us all. We are deeply thankful for the family and friends who stood by him, offering support in health, love, learning, and laughter.
Charles Wesly Leffingwell was a legend in his own time—a man who lived life to its fullest, never wasting an opportunity to impart wisdom or share a laugh. His memory will forever be cherished, and his spirit will continue to inspire all who had the privilege to know him.
