Charles Earnest Terry was born on September 14, 1934, in Houston, Texas. He was one of six children born to Audrey and Earnest Terry Senior. He was a cherished father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. Charles left this world peacefully in his sleep on February 25, 2026, at the age of 91. marked by love, laughter, and an indomitable spirit.
He attended Phyllis Wheatley High School in the renowned community fifth ward in Houston, Texas. After completing High School, Charles honorably served his country in the United States Air Force from 1958 to 1972. This period of service instilled in him a sense of duty and camaraderie that he carried throughout his life. Following his military service, Charles found fulfillment in his role as a bus driver for the city of San Francisco, where he was known for his friendly demeanor and unwavering commitment to the community.
Family: He had a passion for living and enjoyed connecting with people and even becoming part of other people’s family which was evident in everything he did. He enjoyed in life’s simple pleasures like traveling the world visiting families and starting new families as often as he could. He was compassionate about making people happy and would give his last dime to help others. Charles had a giving soul, and his giving nature made him a cherished presence in many people lives.
He was an avid dancer and a lover of parties, always eager to bring joy to those around him with his infectious energy and radiant smile. His ability to connect with people and his giving nature made him a cherished presence in many lives. Charles's passion for life was evident in everything he did, and his joyful spirit will be remembered by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Charles was the beloved son of Audrey and Earnest Terry Senior, who preceded him, along with his sisters Leola Taylor (and husband Reverend Bennie), Muriel Fay Johnson (and husband Tommy), Velma Wilson (and husband Willie), one brother Donald L. Terry, son’s Charles Terry Junior, Emmanuel Earnest Terry, Marquise Terry, Cori Terry.
He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted daughter Charlotte Ann Perdue, Audrey Renee Fitzpatrick, Lorena Marie Green (and husband Excell), Uniqua Hairston (and husband, Christian), Javonte Terry, Step-Daughter Cynthia Gainey, Sister In-law Jareen Terry and one brother Earnest Terry Junior. His love and wisdom also ripple through the lives of his12 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren, who will carry his memory with them always.
In 1952, Charles embarked on a lifelong partnership with the love of his life, Verna Mae Terry, whom he married in Houston, Texas. Together, they built a life rich in love and family, grounded in their shared values and mutual respect. They had 3 daughter’s and one son. And later in life he remarried Roberta Terry and they shared 1 girl and 4 boys.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the countless caregivers and staff who provided Charles with compassionate care at the end of his life. Their dedication and kindness will never be forgotten.
A service to celebrate Charles's remarkable life will be held on March 27, 2026, at 10:00 AM at Alfonso Dawson Mortuary, Incorporated, located at 3000 Martin Luther King Junior Drive Southwest, Atlanta, Georgia 30311.
