With heavy hearts, we announce the peaceful passing of Charles T. O, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, who left this world on May 10, 2026, at the age of 80. Charles passed away in the comfort of his home in South Kingstown, Rhode Island, surrounded by the love and warmth of his family.
Born on April 28, 1946, in Warwick, Rhode Island, to loving parents Meme and Pepe, Charles's life was a testament to adventure, dedication, and heartfelt relationships. Growing up in a nurturing environment, he was the eldest sibling to T-Rose, Maggie, and Richard, with whom he shared a lifelong bond that only grew stronger with time.
Charles was a proud alumnus of Bishop Hendricken High School, class of 1966. Following his graduation, he answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Air Force, where he honed his skills and discipline. After several years of service, he pursued higher education at the University of Rhode Island, earning a Bachelor of Science in Engineering in 1972. His engineering acumen led him to a fulfilling career with Factory Mutual, where he dedicated over 30 years to pioneering fire and wind coverage standards on the East Coast. One of his crowning achievements was the Deer Island Project, focusing on wastewater treatment and habitat restoration in Boston Harbor—a testament to his commitment to environmental stewardship and innovation.
In 1970, Charles married the love of his life, Kathy, embarking on a journey of over 50 years filled with love, laughter, and unwavering support. Together, they built a beautiful life in South Kingstown, nurturing their three children: Susan, Brian, and Matthew. Charles's pride in his children was boundless, and he would often delight in sharing their accomplishments and the unique paths they carved in life. His legacy continues through his children, their spouses—Dean, Jill, and Ericka—and his eight cherished grandchildren: Dean, Luna, Sam, Emily, Grant, Jane, Mabel, and Wesley, who brought immense joy and fulfillment to his life.
Charles's vibrant spirit was reflected in his hobbies and interests, which he pursued with passion and vigor. An avid motorcyclist and classic car enthusiast, he was a well-known figure in local car clubs, relishing the camaraderie and the thrill of the open road. His adventurous spirit extended to fishing in Gorton Pond and Block Island Sound, flying model planes, body surfing the waves at East Matunuck Beach, and constructing homes in Block Island and South Kingstown. A talented carpenter, Charles embraced each project with a rebellious determination and an engineer's precision, always eager to share his knowledge through captivating storytelling.
His friends from both Florida and South Kingstown will remember Charles as a man of grit, independence, and unwavering loyalty. A risk-taker at heart, he approached life with a sense of daring and a stubborn resolve to overcome any obstacle. Above all, Charles was a family man whose love knew no bounds. His legacy is one of warmth, courage, and an unyielding dedication to those he held dear.
Charles T. O's life was a rich tapestry of experiences, and his presence will be profoundly missed by all who knew him. As we celebrate his remarkable journey, we find solace in the memories he leaves behind and the enduring impact of his love and wisdom.
A celebration of Charles's life will be held at a later date in South Kingstown, where family and friends will gather to honor and remember a truly extraordinary man. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a charity of one's choice in Charles's memory, to continue his legacy of compassion and community support.
Rest in peace, dear Charles. Your love and spirit will echo in our hearts forever.
