January 25, 1937 — May 8, 2026

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Charles Shaffer, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, on May 8, 2026, at the age of 89. Charles left this world as he lived his life—surrounded by love and serenity—at a local hospital in Terre Haute, Indiana, the place where his journey began on January 25, 1937. Born to Robert and Della Allbaugh, Charles grew up in a nurturing environment that fostered his competitive spirit and love for sports. His early years were characterized by a passion for basketball, a game that taught him the values of hard work, teamwork, and resilience. These values would shape his life and define his remarkable journey from the farm fields of Indiana to the realms of business, where his dedication and work ethic shone brightly. Charles was blessed with a rich family life. On a beautiful day in 1960, he married his beloved Claudia, embarking on a shared adventure that would span 66 loving years. Together, they built a home filled with laughter and warmth, where they raised their three cherished children: Susan, Jennifer, and Michael. Charles and Claudia's enduring partnership set a profound example of love and commitment for their family and friends. A man of many interests, Charles was an avid sports enthusiast, a passion that evolved into a lifelong love affair with golf. Whether it was on the greens or in a friendly game of cards, Charles found joy in the spirit of competition and camaraderie. His skill and enthusiasm for golf were matched only by his penchant for social gambling, an activity he approached with the same vigor and zest for life that marked all his pursuits. Charles was predeceased by his parents, Robert and Della, his dear wife Claudia, and his siblings Joni and Dell Shaffer. He is survived by his daughters, Susan and Jennifer, and his son, Michael, who carry forward his legacy of love and dedication. His spirit also lives on in his six grandchildren—Kayla, Leaha, Anna, Payden, Mallory—and six great-grandchildren, whose lives he touched with his warmth and wisdom. Charles is also survived by his brother Don and sister Sue, who shared in his life's journey and adventures. A private funeral ceremony will be held to celebrate Charles's life and the profound impact he had on those he loved and who loved him in return. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Charles's honor to the Gary Sinise Foundation, an organization close to his heart. Contributions can be made through their website at Gary Sinise Foundation. As we bid farewell to Charles Shaffer, we remember a man whose life was a testament to the power of love, family, and the relentless pursuit of one's passions. His legacy will continue to inspire those who knew him, and his memory will forever remain etched in our hearts.
