November 20, 1938 — June 6, 2026

Charles Patton, a beloved father, brother, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully in his sleep on the afternoon of June 6, 2026. Born at home in Gallatin County on November 20, 1938, Charles lived a life rich with love, laughter, and adventure, leaving behind a legacy of cherished memories. Charles was the treasured son of the late Hershel Patton and Mabel Denton. He was preceded in death by his devoted wife, Sharon Patton, who passed away in 2019. Together, they built a life filled with love and supported each other through all of life's journeys since their marriage in 1967. Charles proudly served his country in the USA Corps Reserve from January 23, 1962, until January 12, 1964, achieving the rank of Private E-1. His time as an Expert Rifle M-14 marksman in France and Germany during the Vietnamese Conflict was a testament to his dedication and skill. Upon returning home, he dedicated over 30 years to his craft as a journeyman welder with Boilermaker Local 374, retiring in 2006. A passionate outdoorsman, Charles found joy in the simple beauty of nature. His love for hunting, bird watching, and trees was well known. He was a proud member of the Rifle Association and a conceal carry advocate, driven by his respect for the outdoors. Whether metal detecting or collecting coins, Charles found excitement in discovery and cherished the stories each artifact told. Winters were often spent in Florida, where he enjoyed the sunshine and the company of friends until spring's arrival. Charles was a man of warmth and humor, known for his jovial nature and penchant for a little gossip. He had a unique ability to bring smiles to those around him, often referred to as "Grandpa" by all who loved him. His conversations were filled with laughter and his presence was a source of comfort and joy. He is survived by his close friend Joyce Mitchell of Mt. Vernon, IN; his loving daughters Alesia McNeil (Pete) of Junction, IL, and Monica Rigsby (Brian Higgins) of Shawneetown, IL; his brothers Hershel Welding Patton (Sue) of Ridgway, IL, and Benny Lee Patton (Tracy) of Shawneetown, IL. Charles was a proud grandfather to Abby McNeil, Tierney Rigsby, and Jeremy Rigsby, and a great-grandfather to Klaire Rigsby. He also leaves behind several nieces, nephews, cousins, and a wide circle of friends who will deeply miss his presence. A celebration of Charles’s life will be held on June 11, 2026, at 1:00 PM at Vickery's Funeral Chapel, located at 274 W Marshall Ave, Shawneetown, IL 62984. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, honoring Charles’s compassionate spirit and dedication to finding a cure.
