Charles Brian Smith

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Charles Brian Smith on September 22, 2026, peacefully at his home. Born on March 3, 1972, in Richmond, Virginia, Charles was a beloved brother, uncle, and friend to many. Charles was the cherished son of Edward Smith and Patricia Carroll, who have both predeceased him. He is survived by his devoted sister, Kimberly Childrey, and her husband, David Childrey. Charles was a proud and loving uncle to his nieces, Stephanie Sleeman, along with her wife Meg Sleeman, and Heather Gray, as well as his nephew, Ryan Childrey. His legacy of kindness and generosity lives on through his great nieces, Jennifer Egner, Jacklynn Egner, Julia Egner, and Madison Gray, and his great nephews, Jaxx Sleeman, Timothy Gray, and Zachary Gray. A bright and dedicated student, Charles graduated from J.R. Tucker High School before continuing his education at J. Sargent Reynolds College and Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). His passion for learning was only matched by his love for the Dallas Cowboys, as he was an avid fan who never missed a game. Charles was also a devoted Star Wars enthusiast, finding joy and excitement in the epic tales of a galaxy far, far away. Charles was known for his caring and loving nature, a soul who would offer the shirt off his back to anyone in need. His warmth and generosity touched the lives of all who knew him, and he will be deeply missed by his family and friends. A private funeral ceremony will be held to honor Charles’s life and legacy. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to all the caregivers from Harmony Care and James River Care for their compassion and support during Charles's final days. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Charles's memory to a charity of your choice. Though Charles is no longer with us in body, his spirit and the love he shared will remain in our hearts forever.
