Carolyn Joyce Ruegger, a beloved matriarch and cherished friend, peacefully passed away at her home on May 30, 2026, at the age of 90. Her journey began in Pampa, Texas, where she was born to Chester and Laura Maples on February 25, 1936. Carolyn's life was a testament to love, learning, and dedication to family, and she will be remembered fondly by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Carolyn's early years in Texas were marked by a deep-rooted sense of community and family, values that she carried throughout her life. She graduated from Lefors High School in 1954 with a fervent desire to make a difference in the world. Pursuing her passion for education, she attended West Texas University, graduating in 1958, and furthered her studies by obtaining a Master's degree from the University of Mississippi. Carolyn's commitment to education was not just a career choice but a calling, and she spent her professional life inspiring countless young minds.
On January 24, 1958, Carolyn married the love of her life, Durwood Ruegger. Together, they shared 62 beautiful years of marriage, characterized by unwavering support, laughter, and an enduring love that served as an example to others. Their partnership was one of mutual respect and shared adventures, from their travels to simple evenings spent at home.
Carolyn was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Durwood, as well as her parents, Chester and Laura Maples. Her legacy, however, lives on through her loving family. She is survived by her children, Stephen, Anita (Dwight), and Karen (Vince), who were the pride and joy of her life. Her five grandchildren, Leanna Morrow, Peyton Morrow, Elise (John) Firth, Ian Thornton, and Evan Thornton, brought her immense happiness, and she cherished every moment spent with them.
The bond Carolyn shared with her brothers, Dick (Mary Jo) Maples and Tony (Louise) Maples, was a source of strength and joy throughout her life. Together, they created memories filled with laughter and support, embodying the true spirit of family.
Carolyn's life was a radiant tapestry of love, compassion, and wisdom. Her warmth extended beyond her family, touching the lives of friends and students alike. Known for her gentle smile and kind heart, she was a beacon of positivity and grace.

A private family service will be held to honor her life and legacy. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made in Carolyn's name to a charity that supports education, reflecting her lifelong dedication to learning and teaching.
