Carolyn Faye Broom
April 11, 1948 — May 26, 2026
It is with profound sadness and a deep sense of gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Carolyn Faye Broom, who left this world peacefully on May 26, 2026, at the age of 78. Born in Bakersfield, California, on April 11, 1948, Carolyn was the cherished daughter of Jim and Jewella Broom. Her life was a testament to the power of love, family, and community.
Carolyn's early years were spent in the fertile lands of Bakersfield, where she attended Richman Elementary School for her first two years of education, before moving on to Maple Elementary School from grades three through eight. Her formative years continued at Wasco Union High School, where she found joy and camaraderie as a member of the Marching Band.
Dedicated to her career, Carolyn worked at the Department of Public Social Services of Los Angeles County for an impressive 38 years, where she served as a supervisor. Her commitment to helping others extended beyond her professional life, as she was known for her compassionate heart, generously feeding the needy whenever she could. Carolyn's spirit of service was also manifested in her involvement with the Broom Family Reunion Committee, where she played a vital role in keeping family ties strong.
Carolyn's life was enriched by her many passions and interests. She had an exceptional talent for arts and crafts, delighting family and friends with her beautifully crafted centerpieces for every holiday, birthday party, and baby shower. Her culinary skills were legendary, particularly her Thanksgiving feasts, where her potato salad, deviled eggs, and banana pudding were eagerly anticipated by all. Her love for NASCAR auto racing was shared with her sister Brenda, with whom she attended races at the Fontana Motor Speedway, cheering for her favorite driver, Jimmy Johnson #48.
Above all, Carolyn was a devoted family woman. She treasured her family, especially the moments spent with her sister Brenda and her grandsons, Patrick, Kyle, and Kendall, creating cherished memories during their travels to Hawaii, New York, Philadelphia, Louisiana, and Arizona. Carolyn's nurturing presence extended to her surviving family, including her beloved son Patrick Flournoy, grandchildren Kyle and Kendall Flournoy, stepdaughter Kevinique, step-grandchildren Draya and Autum, and her great-granddaughter Grey Flournoy. She also leaves behind a host of nieces and nephews who will forever hold her in their hearts.
Preceding her in death were her parents, Jim and Jewella Broom, her brothers James, Donald, Jimmy, and Clyde Broom, her sister Gloria Broom/Anderson, and her grandson Patrick "PK" Flournoy.
Carolyn's legacy is one of love, resilience, and a joyful spirit. Her warmth and kindness touched all who knew her, and her memory will be cherished by her family and friends. As we say goodbye to this remarkable woman, we find comfort in knowing that her spirit lives on in the countless lives she touched.
A celebration of Carolyn's life will be held at a later date, where family and friends will gather to honor her memory and the beautiful life she led. Rest in peace, dear Carolyn. Your love and light will continue to guide us.
