In Loving Memory

Carmen M. Barry
February 26, 1923 — April 23, 2026
It is with profound sadness and deep gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the peaceful passing of Carmen M. Barry on April 23, 2026, at her cherished home, surrounded by the love of her family. Born on February 26, 1923, in New Jersey to Pedro A. Fernandez and Juana Puerto, Carmen's life was a testament to resilience, creativity, and unwavering love for her family.
Carmen was a remarkable woman who lived through a century of change, growth, and challenges. She faced the world with an indomitable spirit, having experienced the weight of world wars and the injustice of Japanese internment camps. Yet, through it all, she remained a beacon of light, never allowing those chapters to dim her spirit or her capacity for joy.
A dedicated educator, Carmen spent 35 fruitful years as an elementary school teacher in California, where she inspired countless young minds. Her passion for teaching was matched only by her love for painting, a hobby that blossomed into a collection of beautiful portraits and oil paintings that captured the essence of her artistic soul. In addition to her artistic pursuits, Carmen was an avid bridge player and a spirited traveler, always eager to explore new horizons with her beloved family and friends.
Carmen's legacy is deeply rooted in the family she nurtured with love and strength.
Predeceased by her first husband, Joseph L. Lewis, and their sons, Joseph L. Lewis Jr., David A. Lewis, and Thomas E. Lewis, she is survived by her devoted husband of 42 years, Charles E. Barry, who cherished and protected her throughout their life together. Carmen is also survived by her daughters, Marita Watkins and Deborah Goodwin, her step-daughter, Wendy Ridge, and her son, Gregory Lewis. Her family extends to 19 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren, each a testament to her enduring legacy of love and connection.
Carmen's life was a celebration of tenacity and artistry, characterized by her never-ending capacity for fun and connection. As her children, we have been blessed to have her presence in our lives well into our 70s, for which we are incredibly grateful. She poured her soul into everyone she met, leaving an indelible mark of kindness, creativity, and love.
We invite Carmen's friends and family to join us in celebrating her extraordinary life. Details regarding this celebration will be shared in the coming days. As we gather to honor her memory, we remember a woman whose life was a masterpiece, painted with the colors of beauty, love, and joy.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to a charity of your choice in Carmen's name, to continue her legacy of giving and hope. Carmen M. Barry's spirit will forever live on in the hearts of those she touched, inspiring us to live with the same grace and tenacity that she exemplified each day.
