With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Carmen Cortes, a beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, on September 24, 2026. Born on May 20, 1930, in Colombia to Cristina Urrutia and Manuel Gonzalez, Carmen was a beacon of love and resilience in the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing her. Carmen's journey led her to New York, where she met and fell in love with Pablo Cortes. The two were united in marriage on January 5, 1984, embarking on a beautiful life journey together until Pablo’s passing on August 21, 2007. Through their marriage, Carmen embraced Pablo’s six children as her own, becoming the heart of a large and loving family that eventually grew to include many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, with whom she shared countless cherished moments. Known for her warmth, strength, and devotion, Carmen found great joy in caring for her family. Her kitchen was often filled with laughter and the irresistible aroma of her homemade arepas, a beloved family tradition that she lovingly prepared and shared around the table. These gatherings were emblematic of the deep bonds she nurtured and the love she so generously gave. Carmen was also a dedicated and dependable worker. For many years, she served families in New York with unwavering commitment, earning their respect and heartfelt appreciation through her kindness and strong work ethic. Her legacy of service, love, and perseverance is a testament to her character and the profound impact she had on those who knew her. Carmen leaves behind a family who will forever treasure the memories they shared with her. Her love, wisdom, and the beautiful moments she created will live on in their hearts. A service to honor Carmen's life will be held on October 2, 2026, at 9:11 a.m. at Alvarez Funeral Home Inc, located at 240 Mt Prospect Street, Newark, NJ. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to a charity of your choice, in tribute to Carmen's generous spirit and enduring legacy. Carmen will be deeply missed, but her spirit will continue to guide and inspire those she leaves behind. Her life was a testament to the power of love, family, and the enduring bonds that connect us all.
