Carl Laurence Bremenkamp
April 9, 1945 — May 26, 2026
With profound sadness and yet a deep sense of gratitude for a life well-lived, we announce the peaceful passing of Carl Laurence Bremenkamp on May 26, 2026, at the age of 81. Carl was born on April 9, 1945, in Colby, Thomas, Kansas, to Laurence and Lorene Bremenkamp. He is predeceased by his loving parents and cherished brother, Robert.
Carl's life was a tapestry of service, love, and commitment. A proud graduate of Perkins County High School in Grant, Nebraska, Class of 1963, Carl enlisted in the U.S. Army soon after and began a remarkable journey of dedication to his country. His military service was interrupted briefly but resumed with renewed vigor in 1980 when he rejoined as a Military Policeman. Carl's exemplary service took him across Europe, Asia, Hawaii, and various stateside military installations, culminating in his retirement in 1998 at the esteemed rank of Master Sergeant.
Carl's heart was as vast as his career, which took a new path in 1970 when he joined the Morris Police Department in Illinois. There, he demonstrated his commitment to public safety and justice, serving as a patrolman, CSI Inspector, and SWAT team leader. His passion for public service led him back to the military, but after his final retirement from the Army, he found a new home in the City of Elgin. Carl's tenure there was marked by his roles as Assistant Chief and eventually Chief of Police, where he served the community with unwavering dedication for 17 years until his retirement in 2015.
Beyond his professional life, Carl was a man of varied interests and talents. An avid reader, he found joy in the pages of books and the captivating narratives of Western movies and television shows. Carl also had a playful side, expressed through his love of amateur cartooning. His stories and sense of humor brought warmth to those around him and reflected his genuine enjoyment of connecting with others.
Carl's life was anchored by his steadfast marriage to Rebekah Thompson, whom he wed on August 5, 1967, in Morris, IL. Their 59-year union was blessed with two children, Kenneth (Jennifer) Bremenkamp and Michelle Bremenkamp, who carry forward his legacy of love and service. Carl's joy expanded with the arrival of his granddaughters, Kylie Bremenkamp and Danielle Talley, and his great-granddaughter, Hazel Miller, who were the light of his life.
Carl is also survived by his brothers, Richard, Wayne, and Wes Bremenkamp, who remember him with fondness and admiration for his unyielding support and the countless memories they shared. His kindness and generosity were not confined to his family alone; they extended into the Elgin community and beyond, where he truly embodied the motto, "To Serve and Protect."
The Bremenkamp family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Memorial Hospice for their compassionate care during Carl's final days. Carl's story is one of selfless service, genuine kindness, and a legacy of love that will endure in the hearts of all who were fortunate to know him.
As we celebrate Carl's life, we are reminded of the profound impact one person can make, not only through their career but through the everyday kindnesses and stories shared with family, friends, and community. Carl Laurence Bremenkamp will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.
