January 4, 1948 — May 28, 2026
With heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well-lived, we announce the passing of Carl "Butch" F. Merritt on May 28, 2026, at the age of 78. Born on January 4, 1948, in Philipsburg, Pennsylvania, Carl was a beacon of warmth, resilience, and unwavering devotion to those he loved.
The beloved son of Cris E. and Grace A. Merritt, Carl was raised with a strong sense of integrity and a deep appreciation for hard work. He graduated from Felton High School in 1966 and pursued college courses before making the honorable decision to serve his country. Carl bravely served in the Army during the Vietnam War and was later stationed at Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland, where his dedication and commitment were evident to all who served alongside him.
After returning from military service, Carl embarked on a long and successful career with Diamond Shamrock, which later became Occidental Chemical. His tenure there spanned 32 years, during which he rose to the position of supervisor before retiring in 2003. Carl was known for his honesty, tireless work ethic, and ability to fix anything—a testament to his innate curiosity and self-taught skills.
On August 31, 1974, Carl married the love of his life, Patricia "Tricia" D. Merritt, in Nottingham, Pennsylvania. Together, they shared 50 wonderful years, raising three children—Rob, Chuck Emerson, and Cissy—and building a life filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories. Carl delighted in travel, particularly to historical sites like Gettysburg, and he reveled in sharing these adventures with his family.
A man of many talents and interests, Carl was a proud member of the American Legion of Smyrna and the VFW. He had a passion for working on cars and trucks, both vintage and new, and his woodworking projects are treasured by those who were fortunate enough to receive them. Alongside his son Rob, Carl participated in Civil War reenactments and even appeared as an extra in the movie "Gettysburg."
Carl was a devoted family man, deeply cherished by his wife Tricia, his children Rob, Chuck Emerson, Cissy, and Jeb, and his grandsons Tred and Zeke. His siblings, Nancy Wood, Larry Jamison, Sue Turner, John Walters, and Jeff Walters, along with numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews, will remember him fondly for his kindness and the joy he brought to family gatherings, particularly during the holidays.
He was predeceased by his parents, Cris E. and Grace A. Merritt, his brother Richard Walters, and his brothers-in-law Jerry Wood and Bill Turner, and sister-in-law Kathy Walters. His legacy lives on through the love and laughter he shared and the memories cherished by all who knew him.
A service to celebrate Carl’s life will be held on June 12, 2026, at 2:00 PM, at Daniels & Hutchinson Funeral Home, located at 212 N Broad St, Middletown, DE 19709. Family, friends, and all whose lives were touched by Carl are invited to join us in honoring his remarkable life.
