Candace Lynn Gilbert, affectionately known as Candy, passed away peacefully on September 24, 2026, surrounded by her loving family after a period of declining health. Born on November 14, 1946, in Valparaiso, Indiana, Candy brought joy and warmth to all who knew her. Candy was the cherished daughter of Raymond and Clarice Barnes, who predeceased her, along with her sister Rae Gilbert and brother Jim Barnes, and nephew David Howard. She is survived by her devoted husband of 61 years, James Opal Gilbert. Candy is also survived by her son James Anthony Gilbert (Marie), and her younger sister, Penelope Ann Gorgei (John), her grandchildren, Darci Lynn King (TJ) and James Anthony Gilbert II (Keisha), great-grandchildren, Adelyn Lynn King and Zola Marie King, She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Their love story began in high school, where Candy met Jim at Portage High School, graduating in 1964. They married on January 1, 1965, in Portage, Indiana, and together they built a beautiful life with friends and family. In the early 1980's, Candy and Jim moved from Portage to Hobbs, New Mexico, following Jim's new job opportunity. The friends she made there became family. They later settled in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, in 1995, where Candy made many lasting friendships, particularly during her tenure at the Murfreesboro Medical Clinic. She worked in the billing department from 1996 to 2016 and also shared her expertise by teaching Medical Coding at the Technological School in Murfreesboro. She found immense joy in her family, devoting her life to her husband, son, and grandchildren. Her great-grandchildren Adelyn Lynn King and Zola Marie King, lovingly called her "Candy Grandma," a testament to the sweet and joyful presence she was in their lives. Candy was a woman of vibrant spirit, known for her love of fast cars, loud music, and traveling. She had a zest for life that led her to Las Vegas, where she loved donning her sparkles and embracing the excitement of the city. Her lively personality and genuine love for others left a lasting impression on everyone she met. A private ceremony will be held to celebrate Candy’s life. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to a charity of your choice, honoring Candy's generous spirit and community-minded heart. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Caris Hospice Care for their compassionate support during this difficult time. Candy's legacy of love, laughter, and kindness will forever remain in the hearts of those who were blessed to know her.
