Burl Garnett Jr., a beloved father, brother, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully at his home on May 12, 2026, at the age of 97. Born on January 24, 1929, in the charming town of Sealy, Austin County, Texas, Burl was the cherished son of Mattie Pearl Reexwe and Burl Garnett Sr., both of whom predeceased him. Burl's life was a tapestry woven with rich experiences and deep connections. He graduated from Sam Schwartz High School in 1948 and went on to earn both a Bachelor's and a Master's degree from Prairie View A&M University, setting a firm foundation for his diverse and impactful career. He began his professional journey with Boeing and SCOIC before dedicating himself to education, where he served as a Vice Principal at multiple high schools, influencing countless young lives. A proud veteran, Burl served his country with distinction in the U.S. Army, achieving the rank of Corporal during his two years stationed in Germany. He was honorably discharged, leaving behind a legacy of service and dedication. Burl's life was also enriched by his passion for music. He sang with groups such as The Famous Spiritual Consolators, The Exciting Sound of Joy, and The Electrifying Mighty Warriors, spreading joy and inspiration through his soulful voice. His love for modeling and his involvement with the Black Pioneers Steering Committee and First AME Church highlighted his commitment to community and faith. Throughout his life, Burl was a father figure, mentor, and counselor to many, offering guidance and support with a warm heart and a listening ear. His children, Erroll Lyn Garnett and Renita Kay Borders, remember him as a loving, dedicated father. He also leaves behind his dear sister Bridget, one grandchild, and a wealth of extended family and friends who will forever cherish his memory. Burl's personal life was marked by his marriages to Rosie Lee Johnson, with whom he had three children, and Audimese Jackson. Though their paths eventually diverged, Burl cherished the family they created. A celebration of Burl Garnett Jr.'s life will take place on June 6, 2026, at Mt. Tahomo.
