Bryant J. Wheeler, a man of unwavering dedication, profound intellect, and boundless love, passed away on April 13, 2026, at the University of Maryland Hospital after a valiant battle. Born on May 16, 1942, in Baltimore, MD, Bryant was the cherished son of Vincent Jerome Wheeler and Grace Zepp Wheeler, who preceded him in death. He is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Mary, his daughter Kerri Lastner and her husband Joseph, his stepdaughter Terri Borza and her husband Ron, and his beloved grandchildren, Alex and Matt Lastner, Tyler Gault, and Ashley Borza. His lifelong friend, Rich Merrill, also mourns his passing.
Bryant’s life was a testament to commitment and courage. After graduating from Baltimore City College High School, he pursued higher education at Lewis University, earning his degree in 1989. His love for his country led him to a distinguished 20-year career in the US Navy, where he served as a submariner. As a Chief Petty Officer in Navigations aboard the USS Nathan Hale, Bryant displayed exceptional skill and leadership, retiring with honor as a Chief Petty Officer.
Following his military service, Bryant continued his dedication to national defense by working at DDL, Control Data Corporation, Sperry, and Unisys. His work on the US Navy Fleet Ballistic Missile Program for strategic system programs showcased his technical prowess and unwavering commitment to his country’s security.
Beyond his professional achievements, Bryant was a man of varied passions. His love for history, particularly the Civil War, was profound. He devoured books on the subject and even contemplated sharing his knowledge as a history teacher. A man of the sea, Bryant found joy in boating, drawn to the tranquility it offered. His Corvette was another source of happiness, providing him with the thrill of the open road.
Bryant’s heart was as expansive as his interests. He married the love of his life, the former Mary Sullivan, on June 6, 1992. Together, they built a family filled with laughter, love, and cherished memories. As a father, stepfather, and grandfather, Bryant was a source of wisdom and support, his legacy living on in the lives of his family.
As his family honors his life, they invite those who knew Bryant to join them in a final farewell at Arlington National Cemetery, where he will be laid to rest. His legacy of service, love, and integrity will forever be etched in the hearts of those who knew him.
