In Loving Memory of Brian Wallace Austin
Brian Wallace Austin, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, passed away on October 14, 2026, in Medicine Hat, Alberta. Born on May 14, 1946, in North Battleford, Saskatchewan, Brian was a man whose life was marked by courage, integrity, and a deep love for his family and community.
Brian was the son of Ralph and Annie Austin, and was raised by his sister Donna Tisserand, who became a mother to him. He was predeceased by his siblings Barry Austin, Russel Austin, and Marge Murphy, but is survived by his devoted wife of 58 years, Patricia Austin. Their marriage, begun on March 16, 1968, in Calgary, Alberta, was a testament to enduring love and partnership.
Together, Brian and Patricia raised two wonderful children, Shannon Kramer and Mark Austin, in a home filled with warmth and faith. Brian's legacy is lovingly carried forward by his grandchildren, Dylan Nash, Austin Holmgren, Noah Kramer, and Peyton Austin, and his great-granddaughter, Theodora Holmgren. His children-in-law, Paul Kramer and Stacey Austin, along with his great sons-in-law, William Nash and Scott Holmgren, were all cherished by Brian.
Brian's professional journey began in Calgary as a computer operator for Digitech Ltd., where he swiftly rose to supervisory roles. This career took the Austin family to London, England, enriching their lives with new experiences. Upon returning to Canada, Brian dedicated over two decades to the coal mining industry in Sparwood, BC, holding various managerial roles. His career later took them to the Northwest Territories, where he served as the Director for Municipal and Community Affairs, leaving a significant impact on the communities he served.
A man of deep faith, Brian embraced Catholicism in 1989, which allowed him to fully participate in his daughter's marriage. His spirituality was a cornerstone of his life, passed down to his family and ingrained in their shared values.
Brian's passions were many: he was an ardent fan of hockey and football, enjoyed curling and golf, and was known for keeping up with the latest tech devices. His love for music was evident, with Leonard Cohen, Willie Nelson, and James Taylor among his favorite artists.
Characterized by his quick wit and comforting presence, Brian was known for ensuring fairness and justice in both his professional and personal life. Affectionately dubbed "Joe Citizen" in Fernie for his community vigilance, Brian's commitment to integrity often took precedence over career advancement.
The Austin family extends heartfelt gratitude to the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital staff for their compassionate care during Brian's final days. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Brian's memory to a charity of choice.
A private funeral ceremony will be held to honor Brian's life and legacy. Though he is no longer with us, Brian's spirit will continue to inspire and guide those who knew and loved him.
