It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Brenda L. Travis, who departed this world on May 30, 2026, at the age of 81. A beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, Brenda's legacy of love, dedication, and service will forever resonate in the hearts of those who were blessed to know her.
Born on December 29, 1944, in Detroit, Michigan, Brenda was the cherished daughter of Maude Shadd Edmonds and Monzie Edmonds. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Monzie Durrel Edmonds, her sister Beverley Marlene Edmonds, and her son Mark Darnell Wallace. Brenda's enduring spirit and compassionate nature were evident from a young age, as she grew up in a family that instilled in her the values of faith, education, and community service.
Brenda's academic journey began at Cass Technical High School, and she went on to earn a B.S. Degree in Education from Western Michigan University. Her passion for education led her to further her studies at the University of Michigan, where she obtained an M.A. in Education with a ZA endorsement in Early Childhood Education, and later, an E.S. in Administration from Wayne University. Brenda dedicated nearly 40 years to the Detroit Public Schools, where she left an indelible mark as a teacher, administrator, and reading coach.
A proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority since 1964, Brenda was instrumental in founding the Southfield Alumnae Chapter. Her commitment to her sorority sisters was mirrored in her devotion to her church community. After joining Union Baptist Church in Dresden, Ontario in 2005, Brenda became a beacon of faith, serving as a missionary, Sunday School Superintendent, Worship Leader, and Historian for the Amherstburg Regular Missionary Baptist Association. Her leadership in the Women's Missionary Auxiliary and her dedication to visiting nursing home residents reflected her unwavering commitment to service.
Brenda's life was enriched by the love of her family. She was married to Raymond L. Wallace before finding her lifelong partner in John W. Travis, with whom she shared over 30 years of love and adventure, including traveling, fishing, and gardening. Brenda is survived by her devoted husband John, her brother Dennis P. Edmonds I, her children Anthony Durrel Wallace, Tamara R. Wallace Green, Devin Corey (Lonna) Edmonds, Tanya Travis Dunn, and Shawna Travis Regan, along with her six cherished grandchildren. She also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, sorority sisters, friends, and her church family.
Brenda's quick wit, warm smile, and gift for storytelling brought joy to all who encountered her. She was a master at crocheting blankets and throws, a testament to the warmth she provided both literally and figuratively. Her passion for genealogy and family history ensured that the stories of the Edmonds and Shadd families would be treasured for generations to come. Brenda's generosity knew no bounds; she delighted in sharing clothes and jewelry with loved ones and was always ready to offer a kind word or a helping hand.
As we celebrate Brenda’s life, we extend our heartfelt thanks to all who assisted her in her final days. Her family finds solace in the love and support that surrounds them, and they carry forward her legacy of kindness and compassion.
Brenda L. Travis will be dearly missed, but her spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. A memorial service honoring her remarkable life will be held at Union Baptist Church, where family and friends will gather to share memories and celebrate a life dedicated to faith, family, and community.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Brenda's name to the Women's Missionary Auxiliary or a charity of your choice. Brenda’s life was a testament to the power of love and service, and her memory will continue to inspire those who follow in her footsteps.
