Brenda Joyce "Joy" Proffer Weaver
May 8, 1951 — June 6, 2026
It is with profound sadness and a deep sense of gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Brenda Joyce "Joy" Proffer Weaver. Born on May 8, 1951, in Southern Pines, North Carolina, Joy passed peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, on June 6, 2026, after a short illness.
Joy was the cherished daughter of the late Army Major Byron and Joyce Proffer, who bestowed upon her a legacy of strength, service, and love. She is also predeceased by her beloved nephew, Andrew Proffer. Her memory will forever be cherished by her devoted daughter, Taren Wilkinson (Paul) of Glenwood, Utah; her brothers, Don Proffer and David (Glenda) of Seymour, Indiana; and her nephews, Nicolas Proffer, Michael Proffer, and twins William and Wesley Proffer. Joy's legacy continues through her grandsons, Mitchell Stover (Alysa) of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Lucas and Hunter Wilkinson of Hurricane, Utah, as well as her great-grandchildren, Scarlett and Jaxson Stover.
In her youth, Joy attended the American High School in Bangkok, Thailand, before graduating from South High School in Salt Lake City, Utah. Her adventurous spirit and dedication to public service led her to a fulfilling career with the Charlotte Fire Department, which began in 1974. Joy's journey through the fire department saw her rise from the Administration to the Training Academy, and later to the Communications Division. Her promotion to Shift Supervisor in 1992 was a testament to her dedication, leadership, and unwavering commitment to helping others. Joy retired in September 2004, leaving behind a legacy of joyfulness and service that touched the lives of many.
Outside of her professional life, Joy was an avid reader who found solace and excitement in the pages of books. Her greatest joy, however, was her family. She relished every moment spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, delighting in their achievements and laughter.
In accordance with Joy's wishes, a private funeral ceremony will be held to honor her memory. The family extends their heartfelt appreciation to the staff of Schneck Medical Center for the kindness and compassionate care they provided during Joy's final days.
In this time of sorrow, we celebrate Joy's life—a life filled with laughter, love, and unwavering dedication to her family and community. Her light will continue to shine through the lives of those she touched and loved. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who knew her.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Joy's memory to a charity of your choice, reflecting her spirit of generosity and care for others.
