Brenda Barker, a loving mother, devoted educator, and cherished member of her community, passed away peacefully in her sleep on September 26, 2026, at the age of 86. Born on April 3, 1940, in Bakersfield, CA, Brenda was the daughter of the late Bill and Helen Ruettgers. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Mike Barker, with whom she shared a beautiful marriage that began in 1968 at St. Joseph’s Church in Bakersfield.
Brenda's journey of life was filled with dedication to education and the well-being of others. A proud graduate of Garces High School, she pursued higher education at Bakersfield College, Fresno State, and earned her master's degree from San Diego State University. Her passion for teaching and her commitment to special education were evident throughout her long and impactful career. She began her teaching journey at Little Beardsley Elementary School in 1963 before moving to El Centro, where she served the Central Union High School District as an elementary and special education teacher until her retirement in 1997.
After retirement, Brenda continued to make significant contributions to her community. She became a steadfast advocate for CASA of Kern County, where she dedicated a decade of her life to speaking on behalf of children as a court-appointed special advocate. Her commitment to advocacy was a testament to her caring and compassionate nature.
Brenda cherished her family deeply. She is survived by her loving sister, Joyce Collins, her devoted daughter, Marquetta Cota, and son-in-law, Dave Cota, and her beloved son, John Barker, and daughter-in-law, Crystal Barker. Brenda's legacy lives on through her cherished grandchildren, Max and Gavin Cota, who brought immense joy to her life.
In addition to her professional achievements, Brenda found joy in the simple pleasures of life. She was an avid reader and a member of book clubs in Bakersfield and Whittier, where she shared her love of literature with friends. Always sharp-witted and quick to make others laugh, Brenda was known for her humor, warm presence, and beautiful smile that could light up any room. She remained physically active throughout her life, enjoying daily walks until just a few months before her passing.
A service to celebrate Brenda's life will be held on October 22, 2026, at 12:00 PM at Hillcrest Cemetery, located at 9101 Kern Canyon Rd, Bakersfield, CA. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Brenda’s memory to the Bakersfield Society For The Prevention Of Cruelty To Animals, an organization dear to her heart.
Brenda Barker's life was a testament to the power of kindness, dedication, and love. Her memory will continue to inspire and guide those who had the privilege of knowing her. She will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered by her family, friends, and all whose lives she touched.
