Bongo Jones, a truly unforgettable soul, passed away peacefully in his sleep on August 20, 2026, at the age of 105. Born on June 29, 1921, in the quaint town of Nuuk, Greenland, Bongo's life was a tapestry woven with colorful threads of eccentricity, resilience, and a unique sense of humor. A son to the late Aurangzeb and Roxana, Bongo grew up in a world vastly different from today. He faced life's challenges with an unconventional spirit, leaving school after the 4th grade to carve out his own path. Despite his limited formal education, he possessed a sharp mind and an eye for the peculiar details of life, such as his cherished pastime of counting ants on the ground. In 1939, Bongo embarked on a lifelong adventure with his beloved wife, Sorghtohani Beki. Together, they built a legacy of love and family that spanned 87 years, a testament to their enduring devotion. Though Bongo never pursued a traditional career, choosing instead to embrace a life as a self-proclaimed layabout, his service in World War II and the Korean War spoke volumes about his sense of duty and courage. Known within the community for his membership at the First Pentecostal Church of Christ Scientist in Asheville, NC, Bongo's presence was both a challenge and a delight. His candid nature and sometimes brash demeanor marked him as a character who left an indelible mark on those he encountered. Bongo's life was further enriched by his large and loving family. He leaves behind his devoted wife, Sorghtohani, 187 grandchildren, and 44 great-grandchildren, all of whom carry forward his legacy in their hearts. His parents, Aurangzeb and Roxana, predeceased him, and their memories are cherished by the family. A service to honor and celebrate Bongo's life will be held on August 26, 2026, at 4:00 PM at the First Pentecostal Church, located at 77 Fifth Avenue, Asheville, NC. Friends and family are invited to gather and share stories, laughter, and perhaps a few fond recollections of Bongo's spirited personality. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made in Bongo's memory to a charity or cause of your choice, reflecting his love for community and the quirky beauty of everyday life. As we remember Bongo Jones, we hold close his special message to the world: "If you knew him, he probably disliked you."
