In Loving Memory

Bobby Wayne Byrd
August 20, 1943 — October 2, 2026
Bobby Wayne Byrd, a man whose life was filled with love, laughter, and dedication, passed away peacefully on October 2, 2026, surrounded by his family. Born on August 20, 1943, in Longview, Texas, Bob was the son of Murvil "Blackie" Byrd and Katherine Smith Gordon. He carried the values instilled by his mother throughout his life, leaving a legacy of kindness and strength.
A proud graduate of Longview High School, Class of 1962, Bob excelled as an All-District tackle on the football team, a testament to his toughness and determination. He furthered his education at Kilgore College, earning an associate’s degree in 1964, and once again proved his prowess on the field as an All-Texas JC tackle. His passion for football never waned, and he remained a fervent supporter of the Longview Lobos, attending every game he could and following them on their playoff journeys no matter where it took him.
Bob answered the call of duty by serving in the U.S. Army as a quartermaster, where he was stationed in Germany. His service was marked by the same dedication and loyalty he showed in all aspects of his life.
After his military service, Bob was employed as a truck driver for TP&W in Dallas, Texas, a role he fulfilled until 1979. He then transitioned to working as a heavy machinery operator at Texas Utilities in Beckville/Tatum, where he remained until his retirement. His colleagues and friends remember him as a hardworking and reliable individual who always lent a helping hand.
Bob's heart found fulfillment in the simple joys of life. Whether he was cooking, fishing off the piers in Galveston, Texas, or attending his grandchildren's sports events—be it football, track, volleyball, or softball—his presence was a source of encouragement and pride for his family. In his leisure time, Bob enjoyed visiting car shows, relishing the opportunity to admire the cars of his youth and reminisce about days gone by.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Murvil "Blackie" Byrd and Katherine Smith Gordon, his brother Murvil Byrd and his beloved late wife Linda, with whom he shared a son, Bobby II. Later in life, Bob found love and companionship with his devoted wife of 31 years, Ann, and embraced her two sons, John Eric and Chad, as family.
Bob is survived by his loving wife, Ann Byrd; his son, Bobby Byrd II, his daughter-in-law, Darbie Byrd; and his two sons by marriage, John Eric and Chad Henry, and daughter-in-law Danielle Henry. Bob was also blessed with six grandchildren (Brett, Brooke, Amity, James, Tylan and Sadie Ann) and one great-grandchild (Jovi); nieces Ginger Dudjak (Scott) and Tracee Davis (Jeff), all of whom brought immense joy to his life.
As we remember Bob, let us celebrate the warmth and happiness he brought to those around him. His legacy will live on in the hearts of his family and friends, and his memory will be cherished forever.
