Betty was born on July 12, 1949, in Galveston, Texas, to Bernhard Axel Anderson and Betty Ruth Wilkerson. She left this world surrounded by the love of her devoted husband of 57 years, John Bickerstaff, and now rests in the gentle embrace of God. Betty's journey began in the vibrant community of Galveston, where she was nurtured by her loving parents. Her academic path took her to Richfield High School, where she graduated with distinction. It was here she met the love of her life, John Bickerstaff. Their romance blossomed in the halls of their high school, and they married on July 12, 1969, embarking on a beautiful journey together. After high school, Betty attended business college, honing a skillset that would serve her well in her early career at Texas Life Insurance Company in Waco, Texas. Demonstrating a remarkable talent for dictation and business acumen, she made her mark in the underwriting department. However, her true calling was to be a devoted wife and mother, a role she embraced wholeheartedly following the birth of her first son in 1971. Betty and John moved to Bloomington, Illinois, in 1972, where they raised a loving family of three sons: Mark Alan (Andrea) of Cary, North Carolina, John Michael of Knoxville, Tennessee, and Matthew Lee. Betty's heart swelled with pride as she watched her seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren grow and thrive, each a testament to her enduring legacy of love and grace. A cornerstone of her community, Betty dedicated herself to service in many forms. She was deeply involved in the Scouts, serving as a Cub Scout Den Leader and Cub Master, and was awarded the prestigious Silver Beaver in 1993 for her 25 years of dedicated service. Her contributions to the scouting community were immeasurable, and she left a lasting impact on countless young lives. A devout member of Morningstar United Methodist Church, Betty was a cherished board member and choir participant. Her faith was an integral part of her life, and she found immense joy and solace within her church community. Betty's zest for life and adventure was shared with her beloved John. Together, they explored the breadth of the United States, creating cherished memories in places like North Myrtle Beach, Orlando, Pompano Beach, and Branson. Betty's infectious laugh and radiant smile were constants on these journeys, as was her unwavering love for the Dallas Cowboys. She enriched the lives of all who knew her with her warmth, kindness, and unwavering devotion to family. Her ability to find joy in the simplest of moments, from celebrating birthdays to cheering on her favorite football team, made her a beacon of love and light. Betty's memory will be celebrated at a service on September 19, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Morningstar United Methodist Church, 3714 Fort Jesse Rd, Normal, IL 61761. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that contributions be made in her name to Morningstar United Methodist Church or a charity of your choice. John discovered heartfelt messages from Betty after her passing, written on small pieces of paper and tucked away in her purse. These tender words are a testament to her love and wisdom: "I am alive because of you. There is joy in the presence of the Angels of God. For as long as we live, because you were a part of us, we will always remember you. Happy Birthday with all of my love for you. I will love you always. Some people make the world more special just by being in it. I have learned that it is not what I have in my life but who I have in my life that counts."
