Betty Kirby
October 16, 1933 — May 18, 2026
Betty Kirby, a beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, peacefully passed away surrounded by family and friends who loved her on May 18, 2026, at the age of 92. Born on October 16, 1933, in Gaffney, South Carolina, Betty was a beacon of love and kindness, whose life was a testament to resilience, strength, and unwavering devotion to her family.
Betty was the cherished daughter of Boyd McSwain and Mary K. Eggers, who predeceased her, along with her sister, Carolyn Floyd, her son, David L. Peterson, and her granddaughter, Jennifer Peterson. Despite the heartaches she faced, Betty's spirit remained unbroken, and her warmth and compassion never waned.
In her early years, Betty was married to C.B. Peterson, who tragically passed away in 1974. She later found love again and married Collis Kirby, who preceded her in death in 2005. Through these unions, Betty was blessed with a beautiful family that she nurtured and cherished throughout her life.
She is lovingly survived by her daughters, Susan P. Howard (Mike) and Ann P. Gordon (Tim), as well as her devoted daughter-in-law, Sherry Peterson. Betty's family was the center of her world, and she took immense pride in their accomplishments and happiness. Her familial bonds extended beyond blood, as she shared a special friendship with Teresa Hardin, who became a cherished member of her extended family.
Betty's legacy continues through her five grandchildren who adored her: Aaron Dillon (Lauren), Kirby Velazquez (Hector), Travis Gordon (Ashlee), Katie Dover (Mike), and Leah Stewart (Joe). She found great joy in watching her grandchildren grow and thrive and took every opportunity to impart wisdom and love upon them. Her heart expanded even further with the arrival of eleven great-grandchildren, who brought her endless delight and laughter.
Throughout her life, Betty was a pillar of strength and a source of comfort to those who knew her. Her home was always a welcoming haven, filled with the aroma of her famous Southern cooking, and the sound of laughter and love. She was a woman of deep faith and lived her life with grace, humility, and gratitude.
Betty's life will be celebrated and remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her kindness, generosity, and unwavering spirit will continue to inspire future generations. Though she will be deeply missed, the love she shared and the memories she created will remain in the hearts of her family and friends forever.
A private family service will be held to honor Betty's life, where stories of her kindness and love will be shared, ensuring her legacy lives on. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to a charity of choice, in memory of Betty's generous and compassionate spirit.
