Betty Jane O'Connell
June 2, 1936 — April 9, 2026
It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Betty Jane O'Connell, née Barker, on April 9, 2026, at the age of 89. Betty Jane departed this world peacefully in the comforting embrace of her beloved family at the West Parry Sound Hospital, a place where she was cared for with the utmost compassion and respect.
Born on June 2, 1936, in the picturesque town of Parry Sound, Ontario, Betty Jane was the cherished daughter of Frank and Orla Barker. Her early years in Parry Sound were filled with the joys of family and the simple beauty of a life well-lived—a love that she carried throughout her life.
In January of 1974, Betty Jane united in marriage to Daniel O'Connell, a partnership that spanned 52 beautiful years. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and an unwavering bond that served as an inspiration to all who knew them. Betty Jane's family was her greatest passion, and her love for them was evident in every action she took. Her nieces and nephews were her pride and joy, and she celebrated their achievements and cherished their company with a heart full of love.
Betty Jane was a woman of remarkable strength and independence, known for her stoic yet loving nature. She possessed an extraordinary ability to make everyone feel valued and loved, never wanting to be a burden and always showing up for those she held dear. Her independence was palpable, and she remained active and engaged with life until the very end.
Betty Jane is predeceased by her dear brother, William (Bill) Barker, and leaves behind a legacy of love through her surviving family: her devoted husband, Daniel and her five nieces and nephews Deborah Barker (Manny), Mike Barker (Cathy), Kirby Barker (Abby), Regan Barker (Anne-Marie) and Kara Huggins (Mike). Her extended family includes treasured great nieces and nephews Amy, Megan, Josh, Jason, Darren, Ashley, Jay, Justin, Aaron and Trenton, and each of their families, who all held a special place in her heart.
In honor of Betty Jane, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the West Parry Sound Hospital Foundation, a place that provided her with comfort and care in her final days. The family cannot express enough thanks to the nurses and doctors at the hospital for their unwavering dedication and for ensuring Betty Jane's last moments were peaceful and filled with dignity.
As we bid farewell to Betty Jane, we hold tightly to the memories of her warmth, her laughter, and her steadfast love. Her life was a testament to the beauty of family, the strength of character, and the joy found in simple, honest living. She will be profoundly missed but forever remembered by all who were fortunate enough to know her.
A private family service will be held to celebrate Betty Jane's life at a later date. In her honor, let us remember to cherish our loved ones, just as she did every day of her life.
