Bessie Mae

February 20, 1927 — October 22, 2026

Bessie Mae, a cherished matriarch and beacon of love and wisdom, peacefully departed this world on October 22, 2026, at the age of 99. Born on February 20, 1927, in the serene heart of Arkansas, Bessie was the beloved daughter of Charlie and Alberta Smith. Her life was a testament to the values of family, faith, and fortitude. Bessie's journey led her to Chicago, where she graduated from Englewood High School in the Class of 1945. It was there that she met her beloved husband, Grady Jones. Together, they created a life rich with love, raising six children and eventually settling in Queens, New York. In their home, Bessie was not only a devoted wife and mother but also a spiritual leader, instilling in her children the foundational principles that continue to sustain the family through five generations. A woman of many talents, Bessie excelled as a homemaker. Her life was a beautiful tapestry woven with threads of creativity and care. She loved to sew, crochet, and embroider, and her hands were never idle. Bessie was also an avid reader, immersing herself in mysteries and solving challenging crossword puzzles with ease. Her diaries, filled with cherished memories and milestones of her children and grandchildren, remain a testament to her deep love for family. Bessie's warmth, quick wit, and innate intelligence made her a cornerstone of her community. She was a long-standing member of Calvary Baptist Church in Queens, following in her mother Alberta's footsteps as an usher. Her passion for service and faith was a legacy she proudly passed on to her children. Predeceased by her parents, her husband Grady, her daughters Delores Johnson and Leanora Burroughs, her eldest granddaughter Laverne Jones, and her grandson Raymond Johnson, Bessie is survived by her loving children: Yvonne Arthur, Charlie Jones, Alberita Johnson, and Patty Fairweather. Her family, spanning five generations, remains a vibrant testament to her enduring influence and love. A service to honor Bessie's remarkable life will be held on November 20, 2026, at 1:00 PM at Hodges Funeral Home at Lee Memorial Park, 12777 State RD 82, Fort Myers, FL 33913. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Aviata at Evans and Vitas Hospice for their compassionate care during Bessie's final days. Bessie Mae's legacy is one of love, laughter, and unwavering faith. She will be deeply missed but forever cherished in the hearts of all who knew her.
