Bertha Viola Peterson

September 11, 1923 — July 24, 2026

It is with heavy hearts and profound respect that we announce the passing of Bertha Viola Peterson, who departed this life on July 24, 2026, surrounded by love and peace at the Gogebic Medical Care Facility. Born on September 11, 1923, in the serene town of Rockland, Michigan, Bertha graced this world with her warmth and kindness for nearly 103 years. Bertha was the beloved daughter of Matt and Rauha Aho. Her life was a testament to the values and traditions instilled in her by her loving parents. She was predeceased by her devoted husband, Harvey Peterson, with whom she shared a lifetime of cherished memories and an unbreakable bond. Also preceding her in death were her sister, Ellen Duchene and her husband Gordon, and her nephew, Jim Duchene. Bertha's legacy lives on through her adoring family, who will forever cherish the memories they created together. She is survived by her children: James Peterson and his wife Debbie, Gary Peterson and his wife Maria, Bob Peterson and his wife Gale, and Mary Foster and her husband Scott. Her legacy extends to her treasured grandchildren: Dan and his wife Kristen, Dave and his wife Cassie, Ryan and his wife Chelsea, Rachel, Meredith and her husband Andrew, Megan, Matthew, and Michael, each of whom brought her immense joy and pride. Bertha was also blessed with great-grandchildren Case, Laina, William, William, and Elizabeth, who will carry forward her spirit in their hearts. A proud graduate of Rockland High School in 1939, Bertha was a lifelong learner whose wisdom was surpassed only by her generosity. Her faith was a cornerstone of her life, and she was a devoted member of Siloa Lutheran Church, where she found solace and community. In honoring Bertha's life, her family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the nurses at Horizon Home Health. For over a decade, these compassionate caregivers not only attended to Bertha's needs but also those of her dear husband, Harvey. Their dedication and kindness will not be forgotten. In lieu of flowers, the family invites those who wish to honor Bertha's memory to make a donation to a charity of their choice. This gesture would reflect Bertha's own spirit of giving and her commitment to making the world a better place. As we remember Bertha, let us celebrate a life well-lived, marked by love, faith, and family. Her gentle presence and unwavering strength will be deeply missed, but her legacy will endure through the countless lives she touched.
