September 16, 1936 — April 9, 2026

It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, Bertha Lee Mills. She departed from this world peacefully on April 9, 2026, at the age of 89, due to heart complications. Bertha was born on September 16, 1936, in Bessemer, Alabama, to the late Ronald and Beatrice Rogers. Bertha’s life was a testament to love, education, and community service. She was predeceased by her cherished husband, Willie Earl Mills, whom she met in 1955 and married in 1956, embarking together on a beautiful journey that lasted over five decades. Together, they built a nurturing home filled with warmth, laughter, and an open-door policy for friends and family alike. A proud graduate of the University of Alabama, Bertha obtained her bachelor's degree in Education in 1962. Her passion for teaching was evident as she dedicated her life to shaping young minds. She began her career teaching English at Bessemer City High School. In 1970, Bertha and her family moved to Detroit, Michigan, where she continued her vocation at King High School. Her students remember her as a beacon of encouragement, always urging them to reach their highest potential and to embrace the beauty of language and literature. A devoted member of Healing Spring Baptist Church, Bertha’s faith was a cornerstone of her life. She was a cherished member of the congregation, where her compassion, kindness, and unwavering faith were a source of inspiration for many. Bertha cherished her family above all else. She was a loving mother to her surviving children, Debra (William) and Ronald Jr. (Marie), and a doting grandmother to six grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. Her home was a sanctuary of love and laughter, filled with the aroma of her legendary Sunday dinners, where family and friends gathered to share stories and create memories. She was predeceased by her parents, Ronald and Beatrice, her husband Willie, her beloved brother Donald, her daughters Mary Louise and Barbara Ann, and two great-great-grandsons, Javaughn and Bernard. Despite the profound losses she endured, Bertha’s spirit remained resilient, buoyed by the love of her surviving family, including her nieces, nephews, and countless cousins who adored her. In her leisure time, Bertha found joy in the simple pleasures of life: spending cherished moments with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who were the lights of her life. Her enduring legacy of love, education, and familial bonds will continue to inspire those who knew her. A memorial service to honor Bertha's life will be held on April 15, 2026, at 3:30 p.m. at Healing Springs Baptist Church, located at 12647 Hamilton Ave, Highland Park, MI 48203. Family, friends, and all whose lives were touched by Bertha are welcomed to attend and celebrate the beautiful life she led. Though we mourn her passing, we also celebrate a life well-lived. Bertha Lee Mills leaves behind a legacy of love, wisdom, and faith that will forever echo in the hearts of those who knew her. May she rest in eternal peace.
