In Loving Memory of Bernie Martin Bernie Martin, beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and esteemed community member, passed away on June 13, 2026, at the age of 98, following a courageous battle with cancer. Born on Christmas Day in 1927, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Bernie was a beacon of kindness and resilience, whose life was marked by dedication, service, and love. The cherished son of Margaret and Thomas Martin, Bernie was a man of diverse talents and interests. He pursued his education at Steel Valley Technical School, where he honed the skills that would later define his career. After serving his country with distinction in the U.S. Navy during World War II, Bernie returned home as the last remaining WW II veteran at VFW Post 6743, a testament to his enduring spirit and commitment to his fellow servicemen. In 1953, Bernie married the love of his life, Rita McClosky, with whom he shared a beautiful journey until her passing. Together, they raised two devoted children, Thomas Martin (wife Sandi Martin) and Paulette Irons (Bob), who blessed him with three precious grandchildren, Christine Suski (Andrew) and Michael Martin (Abbie), and Shaun Irons, along with three precious great-grandchildren, Cooper Louise Suski, Wells Browne Suski, and Banks Andrew Suski. To them, he was not only "Pappy" but also "Pappy Mustache," a beloved figure of warmth and wisdom. Bernie was known for his impeccable workmanship and ran the Maple Auto Body shop in Munhall, PA, for over 40 years. His meticulous attention to detail and unwavering dedication to quality made him a respected figure in the local business community. His talents extended beyond work, as he was an avid gardener, hunter, and skier, and a valued member of the Seven Springs Ski Patrol. Bernie's commitment to service extended into his community. He was an active member of the American Legion Roadman-White Post 941 in Donegal and VFW Post 6743 in Jones Mills. As a member of the Honor Guard and chosen Chaplin, Bernie provided solace and guidance to many. His dedication to helping others was further exemplified by his volunteer work at Munhall #1 Fire and Rescue, where he rose to the position of chief. Known affectionately as "Puss" to those he grew up with, Bernie was a great listener and a true people person, whose presence brought comfort and joy to those around him. His legacy of kindness and service will live on in the hearts of many. A service to honor Bernie's life will be held on July 11, 2026, at 1:30 PM at VFW Post 6743, 110 Veterans Lane, Jones Mills, PA 15646. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Gary Sinise Foundation, https://www.garysinisefoundation.org/ P.O. Box 680819, Franklin, TN 37068, aiding veterans with trips and assistance, a cause dear to Bernie's heart after his son Tom arranged for and joined him on a trip to NOLA.
