It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Bernard Yates, affectionately known to all as "Bro," who departed this world on June 24, 2026, at the age of 70, after a courageous battle with illness. Born on December 18, 1955, in Augusta, Georgia, Bernard was a cherished son of the late Mrs. Essie Yates and Mr. Ben Yates. Bernard was a beloved brother, uncle, and friend who brought joy and laughter to everyone he encountered. He was predeceased by his parents, his sister Matina Yates, and his dear niece, Vivica Robinson. He leaves behind a loving family, including his devoted sisters Vivian Robinson, Alverine Coleman, Edwina William, and Anniebell Porter, as well as his brother Malvin L. Yates. His legacy of laughter and love lives on through his five nieces, three nephews, devoted friend Rita Smalls, and a wide circle of cousins and friends. He joined Mount Calvary at an early age. A proud graduate of Lucy C. Laney High School, Bernard dedicated many years to his work at University Hospital and Merry Brothers Brickyard, where he was known for his work ethic and his ability to bring a smile to the faces of colleagues and patients alike. Even as his health began to fail, Bernard's spirit and humor remained undimmed, making him the life of any gathering. To those who knew him, Bernard was more than just a family member or friend; he was a beacon of light and laughter. His infectious humor and warmth created bonds that were unbreakable, particularly with his brother Malvin and sister Vivian, with whom he shared a special and inseparable connection. .
