In Loving Memory of Benton Lee Spicer
Benton Lee Spicer, a beloved son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, departed this world peacefully on June 18, 2026, at the age of 92, following injuries sustained from a fall. His passing leaves a profound void in the hearts of all who knew him, yet his legacy of kindness, dedication, and love will continue to inspire and guide us.
Benton was born on March 4, 1934, in Springfield, Missouri, to proud parents Howard and Edith Spicer. He was the younger brother of Bradford Spicer and shared a close bond with his sister, Deasue Bell. From an early age, Benton exhibited a curiosity for the world around him, a trait that would later lead him to a distinguished career in aviation and simulation.
In 1954, Benton began his service in the United States Air Force, dedicating 23 years of his life to his country. Rising to the rank of Master Sergeant, he served with honor and distinction until his retirement in 1978. Benton's work in Flight Simulation was pioneering; he contributed significantly to the field through his work with Leer Jet, Singer/Link, and NASA. He managed the first Space Shuttle Simulator, playing a vital role in training astronauts at the dawn of the shuttle program.
On July 4, 1956, Benton married the love of his life, Helen Faye Greer, in Joplin, Missouri. Their union, spanning an incredible 70 years, was a testament to their enduring love and commitment. Together, they raised four sons: Colin Bradford, Kevin Lee, Richard Joseph, and Robert Dion. Benton and Helen's home was a haven of warmth and hospitality, where their kindness and generosity touched countless lives.
Benton and Helen were active members of the St. Pius X Catholic Church, where they nurtured their faith and community spirit. Benton's dedication to service extended beyond his military career; he was a proud third-degree member of The Knights of Columbus for several decades. Helen, a vibrant and enterprising woman, balanced her career as a supervisor and entrepreneur with her commitment to The Texas Business and Professional Women's Foundation.
Preceded in death by his beloved wife Helen, his brother Bradford, and sons Kevin Lee and Robert Dion, Benton's legacy lives on through his surviving family: sons Colin Bradford and Richard Joseph, daughters-in-law Mara, Theresa, Mary, and Bea, and his cherished grandchildren Lenrissa, Mariah, Joseph, Sara, and Kevin. His great-grandchildren Cyrus and Sadie will carry forward the values he cherished.
Benton's compassionate nature, unwavering generosity, and infectious friendliness made him a beloved figure in every community he touched. He and Helen were adored by many, leaving an indelible mark on all they encountered. As we remember Benton, we celebrate a life well-lived—a life of service, love, and unwavering faith.
A memorial service to honor Benton Lee Spicer's remarkable life will be held at St. Pius X Catholic Church, where family and friends will gather to pay tribute to a man whose spirit will forever remain in our hearts. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to organizations that support veterans and aerospace education, reflecting Benton's lifelong passions.
Rest in peace, dear Benton. Your legacy of love and service will continue to guide and inspire us all.
