December 1, 1961 — July 9, 2026
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Benjamin Blige Jr., a beloved companion, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, on July 9, 2026. Benjamin was peacefully surrounded by a host of family at the time of his passing, a testament to the love and care he shared throughout his life.
Born on December 1, 1961, Benjamin was the cherished son of the late Martha Grovner Blige and Benjamin Blige Sr. He was raised in a close-knit family that instilled in him the values of hard work, dedication, and community. Educated through the McIntosh County School System, Benjamin was a proud lifelong resident of the area.
Benjamin found his calling as a commercial fisherman, spending most of his adult life on the waters, where he found both purpose and solace. His strong work ethic and passion for his craft earned him the respect and admiration of his peers. He was known for his generosity, always willing to lend a hand to those in need, and his dedication to his work and family was unparalleled.
A man of deep faith, Benjamin was an active member of the First African Baptist Church in Darien, Georgia. His spiritual life was a cornerstone of his existence, providing him with strength and guidance throughout his journey.
Benjamin is survived by his devoted longtime companion, Tina Brantley, who was his steadfast partner and confidante. He leaves behind his cherished daughter, Lakeisha Akins, and his beloved bonus daughter, Sadayia Akins, who both brought immense pride and joy to his life. As a grandfather, Benjamin adored his two grandchildren, Shyhem and La'Mia Perry, who brought laughter and light into his days.
He is also mourned by his sisters, Teresa Grovner (Al), Betty Evans (Herman), Cynthia Jones (Rudolph), and his brothers, Charles Grovner (June) and Johnll Blige (Connie). Benjamin's family circle extended to include a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends, all of whom will remember him fondly for his warmth, humor, and unwavering support.
In his leisure time, Benjamin could often be found sitting in front of the local Laundromat, a familiar and comforting presence in the community. He enjoyed these simple moments, connecting with friends and sharing stories, embodying the spirit of camaraderie and friendship.
Benjamin was predeceased by his loving parents, Martha and Benjamin Sr., whose memories he cherished and carried with him throughout his life.
