It is with profound sadness yet deep gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Colonel Basil Edmond Rooney, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and friend, who departed this world on March 20, 2026, at the age of 81. Ed was born on February 5, 1945, in Henryetta, Oklahoma, to Hilton W. Rooney and Opal Been Rooney. He was predeceased by his parents and his brother, John, but leaves an enduring legacy with his beloved wife of 60 years, Karen, and their precious family.
Ed's journey began in the warm embrace of his family in Oklahoma and took him to diverse and remarkable places. He spent his formative years in Puerto Rico, graduating from Roosevelt Roads High School in 1963. He then pursued higher education at the University of Missouri, earning a bachelor's degree in 1967. Driven by a passion for knowledge and service, Ed obtained a Master’s Degree from the Air Force Institute of Technology in 1971.
In 1966, Ed and Karen Cox exchanged vows in Columbia, Missouri, embarking on a lifelong adventure filled with love, laughter, and three wonderful children. Their family grew to include Bruce, his wife Shannon, and two grandchildren, Ellie and Cole; Heather and her child Roxii; and Patrick, with his children Jack and Hazel. Ed's life was further enriched by numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and a wide circle of cherished friends.
Colonel Rooney dedicated 27 years of his life to the United States Air Force, serving with distinction from 1967 until his retirement in 1994. His military career included a tour in Vietnam and two assignments in Germany, the latter during Desert Storm, along with various stateside postings. A man of great honor and integrity, Ed attained the rank of Colonel, a testament to his leadership and unwavering commitment to his country.
Beyond his military career, Ed was a man of many passions. His love for music was profound, manifesting in his roles as a singer and director of chapel choirs. In Germany, he founded and directed the Eagle Singers, a four-part men's choral group, and while in Florida he participated in a local theater production of "The Music Man." Ed also enjoyed fishing, reading, and traveling the world with his beloved Karen, creating countless memories along the way.
Ed was renowned for his ability to make everyone feel welcome and valued, a reflection of his kind heart and generous spirit. His presence truly lit up a room, and his legacy will continue to inspire all who knew him.
A celebration of Ed's life will be held on June 5, 2026, at 11:30 AM at the Sarasota National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Wounded Warriors Foundation or the Tunnels to Towers Foundation, organizations that represent the values Ed held dear.
Though Ed has left this earthly realm, his spirit remains forever in our hearts. As his family, we take comfort in knowing that his journey continues beyond this life, in a place where his song will never cease.
"Forever In Our Hearts."
