In Loving Memory

Barry Rittman
January 5, 1939 — October 3, 2026
Barry was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Barry was born on January 5, 1939, in London, England, and his journey through life touched the hearts of many. Surrounded by his family, Barry died on October 3, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and friendship.
Barry shared his life with his soulmate and wife, Gillian, whom he married on July 27, 1968, in Barking, England. Together, they built a life in Iowa City, Iowa and Houston, Texas. Barry's sense of humor was a constant companion, brightening the lives of all who knew him. His family was the cornerstone of his life, and he was a loving husband, a great Dad to John and Allison, and a doting grandfather to Olivia (and fiancé Leo) and Elliot. His love extended to numerous nieces, nephews, and dear and special friends, all of whom were touched by his generosity and kindness.
He earned both a Master's and a PhD from the University of Iowa. As an educator, Barry imparted knowledge to thousands of students at the University of Iowa and the University of Texas Health Science Center, where he taught in both the Dental and Medical schools. His commitment to education and the well-being of others left an indelible mark on the academic community.
Barry found joy in the simple pleasures of gardening and was an avid lover of animals, especially cats. His playful spirit and penchant for jokes brought smiles to many faces. Barry had an extraordinary ability to make friends in any setting, whether it was a grocery store, an elevator, or a public event. Every encounter was an opportunity to connect and share with new friends.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the caring staff at Vantage Hospice and his caregiver, Yusuf, for their kindness and thoughtfulness during Barry's final days.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Braes Interfaith Ministries, an organization close to Barry's heart where he volunteered for many years. https://braesinterfaithministries.org/donate
Barry's warmth, humor, and generosity will be deeply missed, but his spirit will continue to inspire those who had the privilege of knowing him. The memories of his laughter and love will forever remain in our hearts.
