Born on May 30, 1929, in the charming town of Bluefield, Virginia, Barbara was a woman of grace, warmth, and unwavering love, whose legacy will be lovingly carried forward by her family and all who had the privilege of knowing her. Barbara was the cherished daughter of Hugh and Ima Joyce Morgan, whose nurturing guidance shaped the compassionate and generous woman she became. A proud graduate of Graham High School and Bluefield Business College, Barbara was a beacon of knowledge and tenacity, traits that she imbued in every aspect of her life. In 1952, Barbara married her childhood sweetheart, Benjamin Elbert Bates, in the very town where their love story began. Together, they embarked on a journey of shared dreams and unwavering devotion. Their union, which spanned over five decades, was a testament to true partnership and love. After living in Maryland for much of their married life, they returned to the welcoming embrace of Bluefield, where they spent their golden years. Barbara's career was a tapestry woven with dedication and heart. She offered her skills at the Bluefield Monument Company, but it was her role as a homemaker where she truly flourished. Her home was a haven of warmth and comfort, extending her love and care to her family and all who crossed her threshold. An avid volunteer, Barbara dedicated her time to her Methodist church communities and was a founding member and president of the Bluefield VA Historical Society. Her passion for history and community service stood as pillars of her life’s work. In her leisure, Barbara was a woman of many talents. Her garden was a reflection of her nurturing spirit, each bloom a testament to her exquisite green thumb. Her artistry captured the serene beauty of winter scenes, leaving behind a collection of works that will be treasured by her family. Her kitchen was a canvas of culinary delights, where family recipes were lovingly prepared and shared. Barbara’s passion for family genealogy and antique collecting spoke to her desire to connect with the past and preserve it for future generations. Barbara was predeceased by her beloved husband, Benjamin, her parents, Hugh and Ima Joyce Morgan, her sisters Elizabeth Persig, Joyce Lily, Helen, Jacque Palmer, and her brothers Hugh and Amick Morgan. She leaves behind a legacy of love in her surviving family: her devoted son, Kyle (Kim) Bates, her cherished grandchildren, Benjamin (Kristin) Bates and Megan (Gary) Roberts, and her adored great-grandchildren, Luke and Penelope Roberts. She is also survived by her loving sister, Judith Nelson. Barbara’s life was a tapestry of love, honesty, and resilience. Known for speaking her mind with honesty and compassion, she embraced her later years with flexibility and realism, moving to Kansas City to be closer to her family. Her spirit of endurance and adaptability was an inspiration to all who knew her. A service to celebrate Barbara’s life will be held in her hometown of Bluefield, Virginia, where her journey began. Her family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to everyone who supported Barbara throughout her life. In lieu of flowers, they ask that donations be made in her name to the Bluefield VA Historical Society. In the words of her family: "Barbara lived a full and love-filled life.
