Born in Chicago, IL, on December 2, 1935, she was the beloved daughter of the late Michael Fritzen and Hedwig Kammermeier.
Barbara was a beacon of love and devotion, a reflection of the enduring partnership she shared with her beloved husband, Alfred. Their marriage of 62 years was a testament to unconditional love and mutual respect, setting an inspiring example for their family. Although she is now reunited with Alfred in eternal rest, she leaves behind a legacy of family and faith with her cherished children: Rosemarie (John Spotts), Michael (Shelly), Elizabeth (Hans Gustavsen), and Thomas (MaryBeth). Her legacy further extends to her nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, who will carry forward her memory and values.
A lifelong learner, Barbara pursued her passion for education by earning a Bachelor's Degree from Loyola University, followed by a Master's Degree. Her career as a German teacher at St. Viator's High School was not just a profession but a calling. Her dedication was recognized nationally when she was awarded the National German Teacher of the Year, an accolade that took her to Washington, D.C., and filled her family with pride.
Barbara was a woman of unwavering faith and an active member of the Catholic community. Her involvement with the Catholic Holping Society of Chicago and St. James Church was profound. Alongside Alfred, she helped organize vibrant Oktoberfests and reinitiated cherished funeral luncheons. She was a founding member of one of the longest-running Faith Sharing groups at St. James, a testament to her commitment to nurturing spiritual connections. Her crafted prayer shawls, infused with love and prayers, brought comfort and warmth to many.
A woman of many talents, Barbara's creativity knew no bounds. Her sewing skills were legendary, crafting matching outfits for her daughters and treasured doll clothes for her granddaughters. With quilting, knitting, and crocheting, she found artistic expressions that brought her joy and left a tangible legacy for her family. Her kitchen was a sanctuary of delectable aromas, where her baking prowess was both a gift and a calling card. The family piano gatherings, especially at Christmas, echo with the memories of her playing and singing, a cherished tradition that will continue in her honor.
Barbara's presence was marked by a quiet smile and dancing eyes, traits that endeared her to all who knew her. Her warmth, kindness, and unwavering love made her a cornerstone of her family and community.
