Barbara Hall Wood

January 21, 1939 — June 25, 2026

Barbara Hall Wood, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, passed peacefully on June 25, 2026, at the age of 87. Born on January 21, 1939, in Memphis, Tennessee, Barbara was the cherished daughter of Frank Marion Hall and Vera Louise Zoder and grew up in a home filled with love and laughter. Her family relocated to Gainesville, Florida in 1941 when her father accepted a position as Director of Public Health in Alachua County. Barbara's early life in Gainesville was marked by her close-knit family, which included her younger brother, Michael Hall, who predeceased her. She carried the warmth of those early years throughout her life, nurturing deep connections with those she loved. Barbara's education at Gainesville High School, where she graduated in 1957, set the foundation for her lifelong commitment to learning and service. On December 17, 1957, Barbara married the love of her life, Bobby Wood. Their remarkable union lasted 69 joyful years, characterized by mutual respect and shared passions. Together, they raised two wonderful daughters, Cynthia Dompe and Elizabeth Grotts, who were the center of Barbara's world. She took immense pride in her family, and nothing brought her more joy than being a mother and grandmother. With her husband, she obtained her real estate license and worked with him running a successful real estate agency, Hometown Realty for many years. In addition, Barbara served in the Pink Ladies Auxiliary at Alachua General Hospital for over two decades, an organization that assisted with patient orientation and information desks and provided early seed money to establish the first hospice care programs in the Gainesville area. Barbara and Bobby shared a love for the great outdoors, cherishing time spent camping, fishing, scalloping, and boating. These activities were a testament to their adventurous spirits and the deep bond they shared. Alongside her family, her church community at St. Patrick's Catholic Church held a special place in her heart. A lifelong member, Barbara dedicated her time and talents to the church, assisting with rectory business and visiting fellow members who faced terminal illnesses. Known for her wonderful smile and loving nature, Barbara was a beacon of kindness and compassion. She never missed a birthday, graduation, or other important event, ensuring each family member felt special and celebrated. Her concern for the needs of others was evident in every aspect of her life, leaving a lasting impression on everyone she met. Barbara is survived by her devoted husband, Bobby; her daughters, Cynthia Dompe (Alex) and Elizabeth Grotts (Kenneth); and her treasured grandchildren, Lillian Dompe (Kyle), Barbara Ann Dompe, Jennifer Sanders (Jason), Ryne Grotts (Melissa), and Lucas Grotts (Susan). Her legacy continues through her five great-grandchildren, who will carry forward her spirit of love and generosity. She also leaves behind many close family friends who were touched by her warmth and kindness. In honor of Barbara's memory, the family kindly requests donations be made to a charity of your choice. They also wish to extend their deepest gratitude to Community Hospice and Palliative Care and Trustwell Assisted Living for the compassionate care they provided. Barbara Wood's life was a testament to the power of love, family, and faith. Her spirit will remain with us, a guiding light for all who had the privilege to know her. As we say goodbye, we hold her memory close, forever grateful for the time we shared.
