Barbara Elaine Cousin

Barbara Elaine Cousin, a cherished soul known for her unwavering faith, generosity, and melodious voice, passed away peacefully at UNC Hospital. Born on January 19, 1951, in Mebane, North Carolina, Barbara was a beacon of light and love to all who knew her. Her journey on this earth concluded gracefully, leaving behind a legacy of kindness and song that will echo in the hearts of her loved ones forever. The daughter of John S. Cousin and Nellie M. Swepson Cousin, Barbara was a devoted family historian who could effortlessly recount stories from her early childhood, weaving a rich tapestry of family history that kept cherished memories alive. She was predeceased by her beloved brother, Michael A. Cousin, and her dear sister, Florissa C. Walker, both of whom she held close to her heart. Barbara was a proud graduate of Orange High School, Class of 1969, and later earned an associate degree in Early Childhood from Alamance Community College. Her professional life was marked by dedication and care, from her time with Melville Furniture Company and Royal Home Fashion, to her joyful service at Stephanie's Childcare, from which she retired. Her faith was the cornerstone of her life, and she was an active member of Hunter's Chapel AME Church. Barbara served diligently on the Steward Board, Pastor Aide, Stewardess Board, and participated in the Gospel, Senior, and Children's Choirs. As the parliamentarian of the Cassie B. Mebane Missionary Society, she nurtured her community with a loving spirit. Barbara's passion for singing was evident to all who knew her. She often sang with her church choir and accompanied Evangelist Dorothy Brooks on many singing engagements. Her voice, a comforting presence, will now join the Heavenly Choir, singing praises eternally. She is survived by her beloved children, Marla Thompson (Raymond) and Maia Cousin (Charles), who inherited her warmth and strength. Her legacy continues through her cherished grandchildren, including Trenton Thompson (Kaleigh), and honorary grandchildren, Benjamin Eleanya, Xoi Lindsey, and Emory Lineberry. Her siblings, Elder Anita Thompson and John Cousin, Jr., also remain to celebrate her life and honor her memory. Barbara's life was a testament to giving selflessly, singing joyfully, and trusting in God through every storm. Even when her own strength wavered, her spirit never did. Her family extends heartfelt thanks to Tamesha Thompson-Eleanya for her devoted care, as well as to the staff at Fresenius Kidney Care in Mebane, Omedicis nursing staff, and UNC Medical Center. A celebration of Barbara's life will take place on September 20, 2026, at 1:30 PM at Johnson's Chapel AME Church, located at 431 Woodlawn Rd, Mebane, NC 27302. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice in Barbara's memory. Barbara Elaine Cousin, a loving mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, now rests in the arms of her Savior, her spirit singing joyfully with the angels.
