Barbara E. Meaney, a remarkable woman known for her resilience, strength, and unwavering kindness, passed away peacefully on February 12, 2024. Born on December 20, 1922, in Wallingford, CT, Barbara was the cherished daughter of Robert and Effie Brow.
Barbara led a life full of rich experiences and enduring love. She was united in marriage with her beloved husband, Francis "Midge" Meaney, many years ago in Denver, CO. Together, they built a beautiful family, raising four children. Though she faced the heartache of losing her husband and two of her sons, Michael F. Meaney and Stephen R. Meaney, Barbara's spirit remained unbroken. Her strength and love for life continued to shine brightly through her surviving children, David W. Meaney and Barbara Ann Meaney Walker, and her treasured grandchildren, Heather, Erin, and Travis.
A woman of many talents and pursuits, Barbara was a dedicated professional, working as a secretary, a real estate agent, an antiques dealer, and a Weight Watchers coach. Her career in real estate was particularly notable; during a time when women were often not accepted in the field, Barbara persevered and excelled, becoming the top-selling agent at her company. Her determination and tenacity were a testament to her formidable character.
Beyond her professional life, Barbara was an active and devoted member of the Baptist Church in Pittsfield, MA, and the First Congregational Church in Randolph Center, VT. Her faith was a source of comfort and community, nurturing her spirit through the joys and challenges of her life.
Barbara's personal passions included gardening, knitting, and crossword puzzles. Her gardens were a reflection of her love for beauty and nature, while her knitting skills produced stunning Irish sweaters and cozy mittens for her loved ones. She reveled in the challenge of completing New York Times crossword puzzles, always using a pen, never a pencil—an illustration of her confident and determined nature.
Known for her loving and kind demeanor, Barbara was also renowned for her keen intuition and strength of will. She possessed a sharp sense of humor and a zest for life that she maintained throughout her years, even amid personal losses.
A memorial service to honor Barbara's life will be held on September 26, 2026, at 1:44 PM at St. Peter's Cemetery, located at 90 Stockbridge Road, Great Barrington, MA. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly suggests donations to a charity of your choice, in memory of Barbara's generous and compassionate spirit.
