Barbara Anne Smith, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, teacher, and friend, peacefully passed away on March 26, 2026, at the age of 82. Born on July 3, 1943, in Jacksonville, Florida, Barbara was the cherished daughter of Ruth Mullis Gamble and Leonard Greene. She grew up in a family filled with love alongside her brothers Leonard (Buddy) Greene and Richard (Ricky) Gamble, and her sisters Lisa Gamble-Walker and Gayle Nix, all of whom held a special place in her heart. Barbara's life was a testament to love and dedication. She married her lifelong partner, James Carlton (Carl) Smith Jr., on April 14, 1959. Together, they built a beautiful life over 66 years, raising three sons—James Carlton (Carl) Smith, Randy Lee Smith, and Sean Scott Smith Sr.—and creating a family legacy rooted in love, faith, and togetherness. Their home was a place of warmth and welcome, forever filled with laughter and the joy of family gatherings. Education was a cornerstone of Barbara's life. She pursued her passion for learning at the University of North Florida, earning both a bachelor's degree in English and a master's degree in education. Her love for knowledge and her dedication to shaping young minds found expression in her work as a school teacher at Highlands Middle School in Jacksonville. Barbara was a beacon of inspiration to her students, earning the title of Teacher of the Year and numerous other accolades throughout her career. A woman of deep faith, Barbara was a devout Christian who found strength and solace in her relationship with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Her faith was the guiding light of her life, reflected in her loving nature and her unwavering commitment to her family and community. Barbara had a rare gift for making others feel cherished and valued. She was known for her generosity, warmth, and the genuine love she extended to everyone she met. Her family fondly recalls her culinary talents, gathering around her table to enjoy the delicious meals she prepared with love. Barbara's crochet creations, crafted with care and affection, were treasured gifts that warmed the hearts of those who received them. Her love for the beach and lake vacations with family was a testament to her greatest joy—spending time with her loved ones. Barbara's legacy lives on through her grandchildren, Matthew Smith, Sean (Rocky) Smith Jr., Jacob (Jake) Smith, Shena Therien, Kerri Schuller, and Christian Schuller, as well as her great-grandchildren, Maddison, Sadie, Lawson, and Weston. She leaves behind a large extended family of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and friends who will always remember her as a loving, kind, and compassionate woman. In honoring Maya Angelou's wisdom, Barbara lived a life that truly demonstrated the power of making people feel loved and valued. She may have left this earthly realm, but her spirit and the love she shared will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of all who knew her. A celebration of Barbara's life will be held on April 4, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Evergreen Cemetery, located at 4535 Main Street N, Jacksonville, Florida 32206. Family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance of a life beautifully lived and to honor a legacy of love that will forever be cherished.
