Barbara Ann Lotito

Barbara Ann Lotito, a beloved educator, linguist, and world traveler, passed away peacefully at home on August 13, 2026, at the age of 82. Born on January 31, 1944, in Detroit, Michigan, Barbara was the cherished daughter of Onofrio and Catherine Lotito. She is predeceased by her parents, her brothers Manny and Jim, and her sister Mary Jane. Barbara's life was a tapestry woven with dedication to education and a passion for language and culture. She graduated from Servite High School in 1962 and pursued higher education with vigor, obtaining a teacher certification in Spanish and French from the University of Detroit in 1966. Her academic journey led her to the University of North Carolina, where she earned a Master's Degree in Spanish, Latin American Studies, and French in 1968. Her relentless pursuit of knowledge culminated in a PhD in Applied Linguistics and Educational Psychology from Indiana University in 1975. Barbara's exceptional talent earned her a Fulbright Scholarship to study Italian language and culture in Rome, Italy. Barbara's professional career was as remarkable as her academic achievements. She began teaching Spanish Language and Culture at the University of Connecticut, where she inspired countless students with her enthusiasm and expertise. Her skills transcended traditional classrooms as she authored a book to enhance business relationships with Hispanic clients and recorded numerous language training videos. Barbara's expertise was sought nationwide, leading her to conduct corporate seminars and sessions for educational, governmental, and social services organizations. As a special consultant, she contributed to a presidential task force at Miami Dade Community College, helping to internationalize its curriculum. Her work with Connecticut’s Department of Children and Youth Services was testament to her commitment to cultural understanding, where she launched a cross-cultural training seminar for social workers. Barbara's love for culture and education took her to Mexico, where she was an advocate for multicultural interactions and taught water aerobics, blending her passion for teaching with a love for active living. Her later years were enriched by teaching and participating in Improv, and she found joy in what she called her "spirit" drives—relaxing car rides that allowed her to reflect and rejuvenate. Known for her warm smile and free spirit, Barbara was a beacon of kindness and curiosity. Her zest for life and learning left an indelible mark on everyone she met. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to a charity of one's choice in Barbara's memory. Her legacy will continue to inspire all who knew her, honoring her life's work and her boundless enthusiasm for the world around her.
