Aurelia Garnetta Perkins, affectionately known as Rita, passed away peacefully on July 30, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of love and learning. Born on February 8, 1948, in Martinsville, Virginia, Rita was the cherished daughter of Leroy and Maggie Perkins. Rita's journey was marked by a profound dedication to education and the humanities. After graduating from Albert Harris High School in 1966, she pursued higher education at Strayer University in Baltimore, Maryland. Rita's quest for knowledge led her to California and eventually to New York, where she settled in Yonkers. Her academic journey culminated in a Master's Degree in Anthropology, fueling a lifelong passion for the sciences and the arts. As an adjunct professor at Long Island University and Fordham University, Rita inspired countless students with her dynamic teaching and boundless enthusiasm for learning. A respected professional, Rita contributed her expertise to the prestigious Skadden Arps Law Firm in New York. Her love for learning and teaching extended beyond the classroom; she was an active volunteer with New York Volunteers, teaching English to foreign exchange students and conducting informative guided tours at the Museum of Natural History in New York. Rita was a devoted member of Pilgram Baptist Church, where she found a spiritual home and community. Her life was enriched by her interests in reading, the arts, and the holistic study of the humanities, which she pursued with vigor and joy. Rita is survived by her beloved sister, Carolyn Preston (Perkins), along with a host of other sisters, nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends who cherished her warmth and wisdom. Her family extends heartfelt gratitude to Richland Square, Authora Care, Pilgram Baptist Church, and all those who provided Rita with loving care in her final years. A service to celebrate Rita's life will be held on August 15, 2026, at 12:00 PM at Hines Funeral Home.
