Artis Diane Chester
June 5, 1945 — February 13, 2026
It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Artis Diane Chester, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. Artis departed from this world on February 13, 2026, at the age of 80, after a brief illness.
Born on June 5, 1945, in the sunlit state of Florida, Artis was the cherished daughter of the late Arthur and Jewel Lawrence. Her childhood was steeped in the warmth and vibrance of southern hospitality, shaping her into the genuinely kind and open-hearted woman she became. Artis was a proud graduate of Clewiston High School and went on to fulfill her dream of becoming an educator by earning her teaching degree from the University of Miami.
Her passion for teaching was evident throughout her 20-year tenure at Beach Elementary, where she inspired countless young minds with her infectious enthusiasm and unwavering dedication. Artis was more than an educator; she was a mentor and a beacon of encouragement for her students, always ready with a gentle smile and wise words.
In 1975, Artis married the love of her life, Tilton Lamar Chester. Their union, grounded in love and mutual respect, was a beautiful journey that enriched the lives of all who knew them. Tilton preceded her in death, along with her parents, Arthur and Jewel, her grandson Paul Chester, and her son-in-law Miles Henderson.
Artis's legacy of love continues through her surviving family: her daughters, Artis Chester Henderson and Jennifer Chester, her sons, Bill Chester and Terry Chester, her brother, Bill Lawrence and his wife Theresa, and her cherished grandchildren. Her family was her greatest source of joy and pride, and her love for them was boundless.
Outside the classroom, Artis was a free spirit who found solace and wonder in nature. Her yard was her sanctuary, where she spent countless hours nurturing her garden and hatching butterflies, a testament to her nurturing spirit and her appreciation for life's delicate beauty. She had an innate ability to find joy in the simple pleasures and embraced every challenge life presented with grace and resilience.
Artis lived her life with an open heart and an adventurous spirit, always ready to embrace new experiences and forge connections with those around her. Her warmth and generosity of spirit left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing her.
A celebration of Artis's life will be held at a later date, where family and friends will gather to honor her memory, share stories, and celebrate the remarkable life she lived. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a charity of your choice in Artis's name, reflecting her lifelong commitment to making the world a better place.
Artis Diane Chester will be dearly missed, but her spirit will forever remain in the hearts of those she touched. Her life was a testament to the power of kindness, resilience, and love, and her memory will continue to inspire all who knew her.
